The Battle of New York: Creation Thread

Sorry, i was on vacation too. so i guess ill :bump: this thread. (On page three!)

1. Varitas, i just realized is not a very Arabic name. It sounds like something from taco bell.
2. I only made up 3 general coorporations. We might need more.
3. I think instead of 4 tech trees, we should used one, we dont have much any idea for tech anyways. How can you only make a tech visible to one flavour? ive seen it done..
4. Coorporations needs units.

WWWeasal, I have designed a new map :smug:. This one is diagnal so the width of the streets are nearly cut in half, I made this one by hand, but I think it looks way better than the BMP 2 BIC map. Many more streets were added and more of Queens and Brookland are included. I also managed to fit in Harlem, so we can cram another gang civ in there :). I also found a good map on the internet for important places to mark as cities. You mentioned about the old map that we needed more terrain to create the effect we want. The hard part is finding graphics :(. So why don't we just use resourses instead? The building values are increased by resourses that show the function of the building, plus the luxury and strategic resourses. Also LMmountains is "ghetto," which will be used in the uppper section of Manhatten.

About the map I made:
Starting in the west: the Arm is on New Jersy with few Rebel Citizens (Barbarians.) The two main tunnels that connect NJ and NYC are repressented by bridges, but i "destroyed" them to make the Arm have to forge the Hudson River. Central Park has some animal resourses, with are nice little extras ;). To the south of Manhatten will be better land and landmarks like Wall Street and the WTC remains. To the highest NE corner, loads of Barbarians are living and the Varitas are just to the West. The SONSU controls the south in Brookland. the island next to it is barbarian controled, but have lots of resourses.

I'm finally back from the Academy, and NO i haven't done any work on this :P
I'm going to try to make several urban terrains from SC4 graphics, but it's going to be harder than i thot because the editor splits up the tiles into quarters.
Veritas could be changed to something else I guess, it's just the first fundamentalist name that came to mind.
I'm not sure if corporations should appear in the game, esp as playable civs. The macroeconomy has pretty much collapsed, and the ARM co-op is one of the only large-scale industries left in the West.

Coorporations probably should be removed b/c of what you said and they have no military importance and just take up space. I couldn't think of corporation w/o lame names anyway.
Besides the map, i haven't done anything else. Note: i have a terrain request on C&C.

Bad news, my computer is having serious issues and I can't get online. I'm typing his from my dad's work computer. I would try to work on the mod, but my source of SC4 graphics was a website :wallbash: and until we get a new computer, which could be weeks, I probably won't be online much. Sorry kulade, it looks like you're on your own for a while. :( We may want to postpone the whole thing until I can get a stable computer situation and give us some time just to think things through before we get back to work.

I'm visiting my sister who just had a baby, so I'm online for a couple days, but have nothing to work with.

Since we started this thread there hasn't been much outside support. Are people still interested in this mod, and if so, helping out? I dont want to go to a lot of trouble making the mod if everyone has lost interest and moved on to newer, better projects. :(
 
We can do three things that i can think of.
1. Contunue working on the project
2. Stop the project
3. Change the project
On the eariler thread we got more attention. Maybe we can just change what we are working on and go from there. A mod generically named "Gang Wars" or something with a broader field will work better. There have been many tries to make an urbanwarfare mod, but none have gotten far because it is too hard for graphics and such. We have got pretty far. Let's just work around with the plot ;).
 
One good thing about making a mod that has been attempted before: lots of ideas and work to scavenge from old projects :D

I'm all for keeping this thing going, it's just that I won't be able to do anything useful for a while other than think. (Which has been known to be dangerous ;) ) I think the plot is original and interesting enough, but I don't know how many people know about the project, and how many of those are interested.

Kulade, while I'm "disconnected", you could be advertising for us and see if you can round up some more help, or at least some fans. :)

I was just reading some of your posts from when I was gone...
-Plissken should probably be an ARM GL, esp if there's goin to be a unit.
-The new map looks much better (big :) )- one idea is making an impassable wreckage terrain to put on the bridges and other bombed-out locations, and some type of engineer unit able to "clear a path" to make it passable. That way the ARM can use the bridges once it rebuilds them.
-I thought NYPD and city govt were the same thing, how would a city govt civ work?
-I really don't know a lot about NYC geography, so I'll leave the city names and terrain placement up to you, since you seem to know what you're talking about, but I still would like as many terrain types as possible, even if only for visual variety. (SC4 model I mentioned before w/ levels of R/C/I density)
-Veritas is Latin for "truth", similar to Spanish "verdad", not a taco AFAIK :p
 
For bridges we could plot cities on them so only the civ that controls the bridge can pass by. We could have them in control by the NYPD or something. NYPD and city government are two seprate things, but we could colide them if you want. Varitas still sounds like a spicy texmex food, no matter where it originated from.
About gangs, would we really have any use for them? Do you still want to include them?

Maybe we should just make gangs barbs, but then we only have the ARM, Veritas (or whatever), SONSU and NYPD/city. I guess 4 civs would be enough, at least for a first version.
About NYPD, I meant they would be represented by the same civ, not that they were the same thing. Because of the collapse of the Federal gov't, law enforcement is left pretty much to run things on its own, so NYPD would act as a city gov't. I also questioned it because the only "military" units the city gov't would use would be the police.
The "city" ( I guess we should just start calling them outposts or something ) on a bridge idea sounds good, but I would like some bombed-out bridges too to limit early expansion.
I haven't been able to do any work with terrain gfx yet, hopefully now that I have a working computer I can get something done. I'll try the basic urban buildings first to see what kind of quality I can get, then move on to other stuff like bridges, highways, etc.

btw could you post the new map biq?
 
Hmm, you don't get much attention for this mod, but please keep working on it, I want to play an urban warfare mod someday :)

4 civs would be much easier. we can do that.
Until we get better graphics:
Mountains- Buildings(kanta'arka's graphics ;))
Forest= Park (snoopys)
Hills= Street (no gfx, just need a black square probably)
Resourses= I have compield resourses but i cant convert to pcx.

If you can convert industrial sprawl graphics to a mountains.pcx. Cornshucker had attempted this, but quick.

Hence the oversized link in my sig. :mischief: We need a little more help, especially when it comes time for unit graphics (although a variety of units that don't fit in perfectly might add to the chaotic feel :confused: ), and some fans. I don't want to make a mod for the three of us. :rolleyes:
Sorry i never got the terrain done I was going to work on (it was for you wasnt it?) but with being gone so long and then all the computer problems I really haven't had a chance yet.


Kulade: post the resources file, I'll convert it with GIMP ( and critique it of course :D ) No hurry on the biq, I haven't even installed C3C yet (gasp!)

Tell me when you install C3C so i can upload the map.
