The best religious beliefs

I've noticed that in most standard games (vs. AI but especially in multiplayer) that taking a religion isn't that popular. Still, some Civs do extremely well with it. What, in your opinion, are the best religious beliefs to take?

Spark pantheon is probably best, pound for pound if you're not Arabia, Greece, or having a particularly lucky opening with many discoveries and faith city states.

Religion beliefs I think are best are reduced cost units and tithe, also mosques is a good one for the extra charges.

Either desert folklore or dance of the aurora (with the right terrain) combined with jesuit education is nice. It saves you a lot of hammers throughout the game. Reliquaries can be really powerful as well if you do a good job of combining them with either the right city state or the right wonder.

Yup.. I usually always take tithe (as I did in Civ V). Mosques are also great for their +1 spreads-ability.

Other than that... it really depends on the situation. I usually try to get at least one belief or a pantheon that will generate faith from tiles.

What do you guys think of Defender of the Faith? Seems really strong when used correctly.

It greatly depends on what's around you. Oral Tradition for example gave me a head start to very helpful policies, but I wouldn't pick it if it would only give +1 culture.

I don't know how really useful Church Property is (+2 Gold per city I think), but I like to pick this one. Mainly to give me some benefit to converting other cities to my religion without caring for religious victory or domination.

I find that gold is plentiful enough that I don't care much about the gold-generating religious beliefs. Jesuit Education and Mosques are my favorite religious beliefs, pantheon is quite variable depending on starting terrain, but Divine Spark and Religious Settlements are defaults.

Tithe is still pretty strong. I really like the faith for kills pantheon on higher difficulties, because of how many AI units you can kill. Ill have to play around with others, ive only gotten religions twice so far. Ive found that the extra faith purchase religious buildings gives you a strong incentive to build temples earlier than I would otherwise.

Religion in my experience really requires a commitment to make it good, which can be hard in such a dangerous early and midgame, but once you get a couple temples, it can sustain itself for a while. Theology faith unit purchasing can also be very strong with the right setup.

I really like Papal Primacy. It increases by 50% the typ bonuses from City States (like the faith you get from religious city states) that are converted to your religion.
For me it's way stronger than the other economical beliefs.
For example, at 6 envoys a commercial City State will give normally 8 gold in each commercial district. With this belief it's increased by 50% so it's 12 gold.
All my cities have a commercial district so that's 4 gold per city, more than Church Propriety 2 gold and more reliable than Tithe 1 gold per 4 population. For me it's already better even with one City State.

Converting more than one city state is not hard. In my last game there was 2 commercial City States and 2 industrial City States and 2 religious in my continent. I converted all of them and I got +8 gold per commercial district, +4 production per industrial district and +4 faith per holy site. That allowed me to have lots of gold (I was making 1500 gold per turn by turn 250 with 12 cities) and to have strong industrial zones even without good adjacency bonuses or buildings. I was playing Russia so I had holy sites in every city and I had like 500 faith per turn which allowed me to purchase lots of great people including the full cost of an engineer of the last era.

It requires some investment to achieve this and I know that some people just don't want to go convert far cities but if you do it I don't think that there is an economy oriented founder belief that is even close to be that powerful. The other ones like Church Propriety and tithe requires a lot of missionnaires and converting at the point that when they become really strong you have almost won the religious victory (unless you play on a very big map).

Scripture is very good for passive spread along with work ethic for production.

Maybe a bit off topic but i don't want to create a whole new thread to clutter the forum with....
How do you guys manage to found religions in immortal or deity without being Saladin?

I consider myself decent at this game but just can't seem to spawn a GP before they all run out.

I think the running method is 2x holy site into religious projects, which can reliably earn a GP at the expense of a lot of early game production. Or you can play Saladin, or Greece or Russia, each of which have an easier time getting a religion.

I just havent found religion to be strong enough to sacrifice the early game. If you rush for one you wont have the military to survive a barb horse camp or AI rush. i usually just take the border expansion pantheon and call it a day.

Greece ill go for it since its less of a sacrifice.

I can attest to this, AI rome just flattened me with legions after i got cute and went for 2x holy site rush with germany, on immortal.

Work Ethic (+1% production per follower in the city). By the time you're building space projects with 25+ pop, that's a 25% production increase--one of the few ways to get a percentile production increase.

Bee-lining Stonehenge for the free Great Prophet is the easiest way to get a religion early--works well with Sumeria because they can pump out a few war carts as their first builds to hold off barbs and other civs while building the wonder. Then grab the +50 faith for clearing barb camps belief for synergy with Sumeria's free goody hut for clearing barb camps, and zerg those war carts.
