What is your favorite unit? Mine is the mustketeers. They are cheap and are good for both attack and defense IF you discover gunpowder before everyone else. Explorers are not very useful IMO. I have only built them once or twice. Besides that, I also don't use marines very often.

I find explorers quite useful. The bigger the map the more useful.A nice combo is alpine troop stacked with explorer.

Marines can be useful.A few on a transport can carry out coastal barrages against stray units enroute to cities allowing escort vessels to remain at max strength and movement.Very good at capturing fortresses the ai loves to build. They too expensive to build many though.

Early vet knights are my favorite.

I don't build many carriers or helicopters.

Engineers and Howitzers working together is my favourite combination. And a little earlier: veteran Spies.

I like crusaders, I seem to be able to get Monothesim fairly early in the game, so I use the crusaders to do most of my damage early, the settler-howister combo is great, and I also like cruz missiles, to take out enemy Battleships, (it may be a cheap shot, but it works).

BTW Thunderfall, this would be a great poll question.

My favorite unite is clearly the Engineer but, if it's military unites we are talking about then Mech. Inf. and Crusaders are my first choice.
The Mech. Inf. because it's great for both attacking and defending plus it has good move.
The Crusader because you can get it so fast and it has more attack than almost everything els and two move!!

I like the legion. It's has defence, it has attack strength. It's relatively cheap and it's available almost from the start on. The only disadvantage is its movement. The archer is just a little too weak, as it would lose from a fortified phalanx too often.

The Engineer is a military unit! Just because it has no attack strength, it can still take over a city. And having a large squadron of them available to build a railroad from your infrastructure to your enemy's front doors all in a single turn (over most normal terrain), to allow your spies and heavy artillery in with no movement loss, makes them an offensive unit par excellence!

What I meant to say was: If it's unites for attacking we are talking about!!!
BTW the computer does not count diplomats/spies and settlers/engineers as military unites!!!

Ha take that - you stormerne you.......

Yes engineers are cool

Not just for building those railroads, but also for pillaging important improvements, erecting mountains for extra defence, building forts for the same reason and for secretly being able to take over empty cities.

I almost always focus my force as an equal amount amount of howitzers and armor. The howitzers destroy the fortifications and cities with city walls. Meanwhile, the armor overun units in the open terrain and cities without city walls. A simple plan, I concede, but it works every time.

I use mech. inf. to take forward unoccupied fortifications and marines to defend conquered cities.

I like Marines. i don't know. I always play as the Americans so when I use the Marine units I imagine them as being the USMC (United States marine Corps) and all the glory and history that goes along with that.
They're some of the most capable and feared conventional troops in the world with a long proud history behind them: Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Khe Sahn. They're the "first to fight" usually the first troops INTO a hot zone and the last troops to LEAVE. Something about that legend makes them fun for me to use.

"...If the Army and the Navy ever looks on heaven's scenes... they will see the streets are gaurded by United States Marines"

-Marine Corps Hymn

In game terms though i find the marines to be excellent defenders... if I don't have mech infantry yet.. they're better than Rifleman. Plus they're good for attacking if units (or barbians) slip into your teritory. their movement is limited but I usually have railroad everywhere anyway.

Howitzers supported by a Corps of Engineers: its the only way to fight a war.
(I really enjoy it when the computer civs build this massive railnet in the interior of their civilization; and then I send in the Howitzers, the Corps of Engineers, plus a couple a diplomats/spies to facilitate movement).

Prior to Mobile Warfare, my favorite military unit is the diplomat armed with a lot of gold.

Howitzers are the definitive offensive powerhouse. But for my favorite unit, I shall select the Elephant, because I can get them right away, and they can do big damage until Pikeman start popping up, and even then a veteran can dominate.

Spies are great. Dragoons are good.

But perhaps a more pressing question: What is your LEAST favorite unit? Aka: Crappiest.

I'd have to nominate the Marines. Cool looking, but too weak.

As for crappiest unit... i find that I NEVER build archers. I just don't have any use for them...
