The best unit

Dragoons are probably my favorite unit, or maybe veteran marines.

As for crappy, I must say that I don't get a whole lot of use out of helicopters. By the time I have them, my combat strategy focuses mainly on Stealth bombers, marines, and spies.

Crappiest unite!!!

Well I really hate the nukes - I never use them, but then again they might come in handy in a multiplayer game.I don't really know what unit is the crappiest but I know which unites I never build and it's got to be one of them:
Archer.
Knight.
Ironclad.
Fighter.

I like stealth fighters. With their big movement allowance they can make many attacks per turn. They are useful for mopping up partisans, barbarians and those big stacks of bombers the enemy parks outside your cities.

favorite unit: whatever new unit I just discovered the tech for, esp. when I have Leo's!!

Seriously, would come from this list: stealth fighters, howitzers, armor, mech inf, spies, knights, pikemen.

Least favorite: marines. Alpine Troops defend just as well, have better movement, and come earlier in the game. Warriors are pretty useless, too, but that's probably too obvious

The mighty armor!

The combination of movement, offense and defense makes the Armor the most well rounded offensive unit. I'd take a bunch of tanks over a bunch of any other unit any day.

The Fanatic is the best unit! No support needed! 4/4/1 and they build quick! Plus needing Fundy g'ment your city won't experience unhappiness when your fanatics are away fighting for your country

Well, it must be close to the Armageddon. Lord, you know that I won’t fly by that lesson you taught me, to pull out my Wesson you brought me, and i’m not stressin’ it softly. Get ‘em up off me, ‘cause all we wanted harmony, been bombin’ ‘em. Yell up outta my ghetto, “I won’t settle,” get on my level.

The only thing Fanatics are good for is being stacked 20 deep around your capital come space launch.

Speaking of units, can somebody please tell me how to use a Helicopter in such a way that I can justify the costs I pay to build them. I must be missing something here. As it stands, I'd rate the helicopter as the worst investment I can make in the military. (Hell, at least those nukes I hate so much can be used as a deterrent.) I formally nominate the helicopter as the most worthless (cost/benefit) unit of the lot.
Somebody tell me when and how to use these instead Stealth Fighters/Bombers, etc.

Helicopters are for reconnaisance/exploring and for excluding land units from particular squares. I rarely build them.

My favorite unit is definitely the howitzer. There is no defense against these (unlike bombers, which can be shot down)except to kill them first. And if the enemy has a rail network, (which any smart player has to connect his empire), then it's even better. I use a couple tanks and mechanized infantry for attack(tanks also to attack outside units).

As for worst unit, I would defintely go with Marine's. They are slow, and alpine troops can be used for defense. Helicopters are pathetic too, but I can use these to attack far off weak cities and occupy them.

By the way, my favorite naval battle formation is a battleship, stacked with an aegeis cruiser for defense on missiles. Destroyers are the worst (only good for speed.) I might have a carrier for missiles, fighter scouts (especially stealth), and a bomber srtike force. I can use sub's for missiles, but usually don't.
BTW, navy is only time I stack.

Helicopters are nice to have if you are going to take a city that is on a island far off the shore.

They do ignore city walls but so do howies and stealth aircraft.

If they could carry 1 or 2 units then they would be good.

Come on i cant believe you didn't catch on to the suckiest battle unit sooner.

Come on guys duh.. The mighty Warrior! hahahahahahahaahahahaha..

My favorite uit would have to be...THe Battleship, for it is the best all around unit in the game (my prefernces) support it with one or two AEgis Cruisers and you are unstoppable. However the more the merrier.

Oh yeah what's up wtih the settler howitzer combo..? That doesn't make any sense to me? how does that work? there both sooo vulnerable to air attack?

I can't say that I really love any one unit over any other. The reason for this is apart from looking different there is only one movement point, or one or two attack points differents between most of them.

I like to have units in combinations. There must be a defensive unit (preferably pikeman and up), and one 1 movement unit (such as a catapault) and a 2 movement unit (such as an elephant or cruisader) for all the inland cities (about 2/3 of my empire are inland cities), and in the coastal cities I have a good ship in place of the 1 movement unit (to keep happyness up I always have 3 units minimum)

I have found that not many people have success attacking me, because with roads they'll only wind up with a horde of vengeful units an their *** within on turn and the rest on their way to withstand an attack for many turns to come, and that is 'IF' their ship gets to my shoreline.

because of the costs of supporting and bulding and updating such an army, i tend to lack a little science/production and size over someone that doesn't build much of an army exept for a few ships and warriors and possible a phalanx scattered here and there, but here is the good bit...

I can be on their shore with ALL my 2 movement units and 4 pikemen to keep the cities I take very quickly, because there is no problem with naval power, building units or anything. I have a unit for every problem, I can attack and defend just as well as each other. While my units are on the way to take an opponents cities, I just consider them lost and start building replacements immedieately (usually I have restocked in 5 turns) and the camacazi units on their mission of destruction do not turn back, they are gone until they are dead, and believe me, they are stubborn
wink.gif
. I usually get 3-4 good attacks out of each game, and there aren't many people that don't lose a steck of huge cities to me, if not, their entire popluation in 10-20 turns!

So my point is, I don't think any one unit is really powerful unless you combine them with something else, and if you can master that, it doesn't matter who's favourite units are lurking around the nearest corner, coz they will be DEAD soon *hehe*

If I have to say so myself, I came up with a wicked improvement idea for the helocopter unit for Civ3... go and read it in the "COMBINED ARMS/AIR COMBAT IMPROVEMENT" thread... but since this is a Civ2 forum, I'll leave it at that and go on with the task at hand.

Fav Land Unit - Mech infantry... don't even TRY to take on my mech inf when its on a mountain behind a fortification.

Fav Sea Unit - Not counting customized units I'd say battleship because its just so strong but if we open the discussion to customized units I'd have to say its my very own SUBMERSABLE TRANSPORT. YEAH!!! "ooooh, betcha didn't see THAT coming" - I would say as I did a surprise landing of howitzers, mech inf, and armour.
