The Big Game

Civ or FFH is not balanced, and it is not intendet to be. OO was not foundet in our game, and perhaps James will found it and he played Ecofarm´s civ quiet good. With simple things. He made a warrior rush at my kingdom, i was unprepeared, but even with the double amount of troops, his hero would have killed me. He let me escape with a Settler to found a new city (in the mountains, with nearly no food, that is a bad start :) ). I am small, but that is no reason not to have fun.

1. Svarts land is top notch, really unreal. Period. Resources... defense... it's all there in spades. Noone stood a chance (except perhaps a couple others who got nice land).

2. My land... well, I will let the screenshot speak for itself.

3. My land has nothing to do with Svart's top start pwning all. He was not "playing my civ" or using my land at all, I assure you.

4. I got -1 food in capital center turn 34.

5. I was Grigori - no OO or FoL allowed.

My screenshot and save will show my start is not worth anyone's time. Wait until you see what other people got for events/huts, too. Hah. I don't play PvP to be someone's whipping-boy.

Yes, I know FFH is not balanced (I do not see that it should be or could be in all circumstances). I've been playing BTS ladder for years and FFH for about a year with hundreds of MP games. This is a most extreme example of unplayable start and we are not talking about a couple hour game. 10+ hours of that start is absurd, especially PvP.

ps. Don't give me this about good and simple, as if I am just not a good enough player to handle that land. Warrior rushing with grigori, really? Simple, yes.

I cannot wait to post screen and save. Wait till you see what others had.

ps. Instead of that impossible start, I played equal-islands, no huts, no barbs, no events, quickspeed, ladder gamespy games with 6-8 people three times (BTS :( ), finishing 2,2,1 :)

Water and forests are just too terrible in FFH unless Elves, Lanun or at least take a religion. As grig, with no OO or FoL on the horizon, a pure forest-hill and water start is death (excepting a successful warrior rush but I don't do that). Getting bronze to chop or fishing to work water takes too long. I would have done it anyway, I was teching fishing. I would have hung around and not warrior or even axe rushed! Then the -1food in cap center made it beyond silly. It's true, I'm not experienced with normal speed, anymore, and I'm willing to try again but the screen and save will end debate regarding my assessment. If we play PvP, it's best no events, no huts and equal-tbg, equal-islands, solid coast pangea, or another map that noone gets totally screwed (blessing helps prevent that too).

I was playing the svartalfar, not James. He took over your civilization, the grigori, and he's at the top right now. And while i agree this sort of map can be very imbalanced (yes my starting position was very good for the very first 3 cities, not after that) your start was nowhere as bad as you make it seem.
Oh and why won't you do a warrior rush? What's wrong with that?

I am looking forward to continue this game, however it is a little sad that both me and Dan threw away a thirty turns doing an zero-result war against each-other. At least I learned that you -can- stop pyre-zombies and skeleton-summoning adepts, if you push three times as many hunters in their way. I also got lucky and not a single tree-ent appeared as I walked through the ancient forests.

Just, do Ancient Forest don't burn? I tried to put it on fire a bunch of times with absolutly no results. Also my Pyre Zombies exploding caused no secondary fires.

Our armies were about equal in numbers (i just had a few more warriors and i was in a city). My mistake was not waiting till Poisons before walking around your borders with that stack of hunters. It was just that you were paranoid and ruthlessly attacked my hunters which were actually on a camping trip, nothing more :p

Yeeeeaaaahhh.. camping...

And I had like five adepts, one mobius witch and threw away totally twelve (or thrirteen) pyre zombies. Your defensive stack was so many that they went off-screen. I just figured I'd have to do it unto you, before you did it unto me.;)

If anyone wants to play some today, I have a Hamachi open for it. PM me.

Sorry btw for leaving the second game yesterday

Believe me they weren't that many. When we made peace i had 6 hunters and 7 warriors left (and 1 adept) in that city. If I had as many as you think I would have just swamped you after your pyre zombies we're dead. Your stack went of-screen at some point too by the way.
I'll be better prepared next time :ar15: ,now i know i'm not fighting an AI

Well. I did kill about twenty units for you, so if you had fourteen left when the rumble was over I'd say you lost quite a few. And it was fun. Next time i'll come with twenty pyre-zombies, mages with spectres (+3 death mana) and some supporting planar gate creatures. Unless of course you'd prefer a permanent alliance of the only evil civs instaed of meeting the walking dead.

"An alliance with the Svartalfar!"
"Yes, sire, they -are- evil"
"No, we are evil, they are just kind'a .. bad .. "

Yes, I did have a total of eight? units capable of casting summon skeleton, that is five adepts + five? pyre zombies + three spectres (from mobius witch) + eight? skeletons as maximum.

Your griffon actually was rather nasty, and the bears and all that. I never figured into the account that you'd subdue half the animal population of our side of the map. Not to mention the invisible giant spider that attacked one of my lonely adepts inside my cultural borders, it was a really sneaky move.

:salute:

Yeah stupid spider. Also i thought the griffon could pillage, sadly it's not so. Either way i'll be waiting (i love assassins ). The thing i don't like about this map is that there are such big distances between players (i can really see the elohim or grigori winning an altar victory) and there are areas which would really suck to settle (full of deserts and peaks).

Did you get any war wearriness by the way? Cuz i had none.

It's not the best start i'll admit (although i can't see what's to the left) but the fact stands that it was not impossible and you shouldn't have just left. Arctic didn't have a good start either (yeah i know he had 1 gold in his city radius and another just above it), full of forests just like you, but you don't hear him complaining. James also had a very bad start in the next game we played but he stuck to it. Also i would have liked more forests and less plains i could care less about the corn since corn doesn't give hammers.
You just have to learn to deal with what's given to you, it's part of the game. Or do you always regenerate the map when the start doesn't suit you?

Host said it was a 10-20 hour game. I'm not playing a 10-20 hour game with that start, as grigori, and getting -1food in capital tile on turn 34 normal speed.

He had gold and land without forests.

James also had a very bad start in the next game we played but he stuck to it.
His was average.

Also i would have liked more forests and less plains i could care less about the corn since corn doesn't give hammers.
Haha. You need 2 food sources to grow big in guardian of nature. You got not one, but 2 corn. Also, you got reagents. That's a perfect capital for svart: 2 corn, 5 forests (the rest you can bloom, 5 is plenty for getting to guardian - especially when you have 2 corn and reagents. You know what I got? 1 fish, 1 silk in forest and not a single flat tile without forest or coast.

You just have to learn to deal with what's given to you, it's part of the game. Or do you always regenerate the map when the start doesn't suit you?

I don't make fellow players play a start like that (I'm careful what map-types I choose) and if someone gets -1 food in cap 5 minutes into a 20 hours game, I'll restart for them. No reason to invest 10+ hours in a game that the first 5 minutes are so terrible. But I can understand why you did not want to restart. You had a perfect svart start AND you got a mushrooms event before turn 30, basically giving you a completed farm at the beginning of the game.

In fact, 4/6 people got mushrooms while I got -1 in center.

Sorry man, but I'm not playing 10-20 hours of pure PvP just for your entertainment. I have to have some chance of having some fun too. I don't want to just stare at my screen, clicking enter over and over or warrior rushing) with two 4-population cities for 10 hours while you play FFH like a normal game. I was willing to play with that start (remember - no religion), but the event was too much. I was doomed to lose and lose horribly (or warrior rush). I wasn't even strong enough to help someone win a war.

ps. Why don't I warrior rush? Because if I wanted to play with warriors (or axes, for that matter), I could play BTS Gamespy warrior fights all day long any day with 5-10 people per game and requiring 5-10 minutes to get players. I play FFH for the unique aspects of the mod (besides promotions being doubled).

I'd rather not play with any of you ever again than invest 10-20 hours in that start while you all don't give a crap and play great starts. Sorry.

Either make it team vs AI, or make it at least somewhat fair - not perfect start vs worst start and +farm event vs. -1 event.

ps. I play ladder MP BTS and I'm ranked. Don't tell me about regenerating. I can win immortal ffh SP and I don't reload except in MP FFH when hours of time together are at stake and it is not ladder competition. I'm not just like "too bad, play your one tile island for 20 hours or you are a quitter!!" I guess I'm just not hardcore like that, at least, not when it comes to 20 hour MP games of a mod that very few people play. I'd make sure everyone was reasonably happy/willing to play with their start before embarking on such a journey.

And yes, in SP I will play a pure junk start and terrible random event even at the very start... but it doesn't take me 20 hours to lose the game. Besides, way too often I've play horrible starts with people for hours and hours and then when they don't get a good start "Oh, I gotta go... I have to take a friend to the hospital!" At least I'm honest. At least I don't BS you with some excuse to leave.

Now, if you think that is crap, fine. I'll be on hamachi for ffh and playing BTS ladder. See you around.

Multiplayer\Direct IP\Load Game\mushrooms\choose whatever civ you want to look at (you can start MP saves alone). This is turn 30 (autosave every 15), before my horrible event.

Eco mate i didnt make u play anything as you have demonstrated by quiting. U didnt like it - fine u left.

This is not an E-sport, everything isnt fair. Its Civ and adapting is one of the beautys of playing the game. Bar unbalances in the game (which is to be expected as FFH2 isnt finished yet) i absoluelty love the unfairness of it.

You dont wanna have to contemplate warrior rushing?! well dont play the game then. Ive had the rules of this game posted for 2 weeks if u wanted to play u should have red them FFA ANYTHING GOES. Im terribly sorry if u missed this. - no where dose it say if ur land dosen't suit we will restart. You just stick it out, if its really that crap ull be dead pretty fast so u wont be playing 20+ hours.
The map type (although size wasnt) has also been stated so you could have loaded it and cheked it out.

Also what u seem to be missing is James the wise logged into the game 15mins after u'd left AS YOUR CIV (grigori) and becuase he was prepared to warrior rush he is now toping the game. Ur basically saying u didnt like ur start because it forced you to use tactics you dont like. Well tough because as I have alreayd stated ANYTHING GOES.

The idea behind this was just to play a game on normal speed for what it was. Its not tailored so u dont have to use certain tactics.

If ur good at the other sorts of games thats gd for you but dont come into one of our games then tell all of us we r wrong becuase of a crappy rules set/map selection becuase it doesnt suit u or because u failed to read the initial post. Everyone else is enjoying the game even Smusebaer who almost got wiped.

Also theres no way u could know if jameses start in the next game was average - u werent even in the game and to my knowledge there are no screens.

This thread is for the game we r currently playing and i dont want it descending into a flame war. Im sorry u didnt think ud have any fun like the rest of us are.

The thing i don't like about this map is that there are such big distances between players (i can really see the elohim or grigori winning an altar victory) and there are areas which would really suck to settle (full of deserts and peaks).

I do like spacious maps its true but this is just on the limit for me, any bigger id be pissd. AFter all i play multiplayer to play others not the barbarians that spawn in the gaps between us. (although orthuises axe is making me happy)
I like deserts and peaks though, more reflective of a real world. I love impassible mountain ranges that have 1-2 paths through them so you can gaurd them with borderd forts and stuff, had one of them in the 2nd game it was awseom. I also like places u can't settle.

Id def be up for playing a closer map next time if everyone wanted, after ive killed u in this one (ull get no tower building from me :-P)

Id love to have seen that war u and arctic faught, the ammount of skeles i heard spawning was nuts.

I'm fine with the map, it's just that i'm probably too used to rushing AI's and the current map setup makes wars need more planning.
As for the war it was nothing spectacular, basically like 2 rams headbutting. At first i didn't think i was gonna make it but Arctic was too cautious or unprepared and i managed to tech poisons.
Next time it's gonna be different :backstab:

:p

To begin with, if anyone knows 'southxii' let him/her know that I didn't see him messing me. And WHENEVER, HOWEVER I have a game up. Anyone is wellcome to jump in as any of the AI's. PM me if I for some reason set a password on the game.

I am really sorry if I somehow got someone angry. But honestly it seems like I can't get out of bed or breath without doing that. So - I've long ago concluded that it isn't my problem.

Danielesis whooped my ass on a small and dirty game, and I might not make it and play this sunday.

By the way. I am strongly of the opinion that some of the most interesting aspects of the game doesn't occur until later in game. And I would wellcome ideas on how to make it more long term. Perhaps a large map with islands? But then it would just be rushes with boats.. hmm. Also Ecofarm. If I am bored, feel I don't have a chance or similar. I'll drop out too. In theory I could code some python that doesn't allow PCs to start war with other PCs until turn X.

Clearly a very early and aggressive playstyle is the key to winning many of these games. But its just that I never play that way.

In FFH winning isn´t everything. most of my war was the time for bargaining to survive. Sure wasn´t pleasent, and probably I won´t be a big player in this game, but i think it is more fun to fight til the end... and who Knows... one Day the King rides again :)
:goodjob:

And if someone stomps your Empire... ally with him... and have a strong teammate.

If you don´t have any fun, ok quit. But sometimes it´s a lot of fun to be the last.

Im pretty shure, that james did a nice victory dance, as he realised, that he got me with my pants down.

Pitty u cant play on sunday arctic, i cant ply the sunday after thats pursponed for 2 weeks :-(

Dose anyone want to play a game tonight ?
