Hi all,

My laptop has been upgraded to a Windows 7 machine. Unfortunately I can't install Civ III. I've tried many ways including those suggested on the Technical forum but without success.

For now, I can play on my desktop (also Windows 7 - but managed to install with guidance from the forum) but only in the evening so my turnaround time will increase. However the big issue is when I travel, which I do frequently; then I won't be able to play my turn. My next trip is planned for w/c 12 Dec.

If it's ok with you guys, I'd like to carry on with this game. The end is in sight and I'm not sure a replacement player would want to pick up so close to the game concluding. Also, diplomacy has been central to this game and that will, in all likelihood, be lost if I'm replaced.

However, happy to go with the majority if you guys disagree.

Sorry about this but I've come to the end of my tether trying to install the game. It simply will not work.:sad::wallbash:

I had bother with some games and windows 7 including civ. Mostly the trouble is with the way security works in it where it locks everything by default. Can't remember exactly but I had to set up the security on some folders to allow the installing user to write to them. It was fiddly, awkward and frustrating.

Yup. Pain in the butt. You have to allow all the files to make it work. Sorry to hear about the trouble, Tom.

I can believe your boss didn't get you the Professional or Ultimate OS.

It's Windows 7 Professional. I do have limited administrator rights as my PC is 'locked-down' so maybe that's causing the issues. My home PC is Windows 7 Home Premium. After following the instructions in the Tech forum, my home PC works fine. Not sure our IT dept would be too impressed if I raised a helpdesk ticket for this.

Anyway, if it's ok with you guys, I'd like to play this one out. I still play on a daily basis and only have one week of travel planned (w/c 12 Dec) in the next two months or so. I think by then we'll be near a conclusion.

GPS yesterday... server busy...

:D

Tom, if you have some spare time on the weekend (but who has... :mischief:), you could give this idea a try:
  • Install Windows XP Mode (can be downloaded from the Microsoft Homepage )
  • This runs like a "PC inside your PC". And it's the standard XP operating system, so you can install Civ3, CivAssist, etc with no problems.
