It's just a virtual machine. I have one on my XP that will run Win98 programs. Shows the old desktop, plays the sounds, everything.

Tom, if you have some spare time on the weekend (but who has... ), you could give this idea a try:

• Install Windows XP Mode (can be downloaded from the Microsoft Homepage )
• This runs like a "PC inside your PC". And it's the standard XP operating system, so you can install Civ3, CivAssist, etc with no problems.

Update: XP mode installed. Civ still won't work.

I'm not giving up just yet, though; I have a few more ideas.

Create a second partition on the harddrive and install XP natively?
(However, if that one backfires, you'll need to call the IT helpdesc for sure... Or you could wipe the harddisc completely and then explain to them how you accidentally dropped the notebook into the bathtub, and whether they would be so kind to restore it for you...)

Hmm, I just tried it myself: works ok for me. (On my desktop at work, not on a notebook, though.)
Can it be that it's not the OS, but that Civ3Conquests.exe has a general problem with one of the hardware components (sound card, graphics card)? I know there are cases like that.

According to my PC the save file is invalid. Normally the file is 300kb+, this one is only 60kb.

Looks like the file got corrupted when saving. I replayed the turn (this time the save was the usual ~350kB) and sent it again.
