I think of Colosseums as a virtually useless city improvement that I hardly ever build. They are like building and maintaining two full-price temples, but they have half the culture and don't allow Cathedrals, like Temples do. At the very least, Colisseums should be a good Culture alternative for non-religious, non-scientific civs.

Current stats:
Collosseum: 2 happy, 2 culture, 2 maintenance, 120 shields
Temple: 1 happy, 2 culture, 1 maintenance, 60 shields
Cathedral: 3 happy, 3 culture, 2 maintenance, 160 shields
Library: 50% science, 3 culture, 1 maintenance, 80 shields

My suggestion for the Colosseum:
1 happy, 1 culture, 1 maintenance, 50 shields
Like building half of a current colosseum, but for slightly less than half the price in shields.

This way it would be the cheapest building for non-religious, non-scientific civs to build for a border expansion, even though the expansion would take 10 turns to happen.

You would still have the alternative to build a Temple, which would produce twice as much culture, and allow the future build of Cathedrals. Religious civs would still build Temples first, of course, and libraries would still be the cheapest culture build for Scientific civs.

Of course you can make this change in the editor, but I would love it if the stock rules made the Colosseum worth building more often.

Does anyone know if the beta testers of C3C have tried to balance any city improvements? Coastal Fortresses come to mind as another weak one.

We can't tell you that without breaking the NDA. ;)

it should be have a commercial attribute, like tourism or something

I like that idea. right now when you have your land, it's like you're this greedy man hoarding all your cities. "No one come near me!" It's kinda strange, no?

personally, i think they should replace the collosseum with an amphitheater, representing both Greek, and roman enternainment areas, as opposed to just Roman- and the Colloseum be made indo a wonder with an effect like increasing happiness, or culture throught the empire, or even giving barracks to all cities (it would make gladiatorial events populer, and as such giver every one the basics on how to be a lean, mean, Roman stlye millitary machine :D)

Wow Xen. You really know a lot of history. :)

The Colosseum should actually be strengthened and the old Civ2 ability of doubling happiness with electronics should also be included. Also, I was thinking of the ability of cities with colloseums to double the effects of the WLTK day (think of Circuses thrown by the Roman Emperors!!;))

Colloseum- 2 happy, 2 culture, 2 maint. and 120 shields.
4 happy with Electronics.
Doubles effect of WLTK day.

The Colloseum could give a free Ampitheater in every city.

Anyway, awhile back I experimented with giving Militaristic civs 1/2 price Colloseums. I felt it was pretty nice. They became the price of a Temple with 2 happy faces, instead of 1. Plus they had 2 culture. As I mostly find Militaristic to be one of the weaker traits, I felt this was a nice addition.

The Colloseum should reduce war weariness in republics. Main reason being it keeps people happy by entertaining them and the wars are the best ways to get slaves to fight in them.

In PTW I added the +50% luxuries option to it. Merchandizing, and all. ;)

belive it r not, most of the Roman gladiators were NOT slaves- more often the were free men who voluntarilly choose to enter, or the condemed, or desperates looking at this as thire last chance in life

Very true, but the warlike nature of colloseum games would tend to jade the public to the inhumanities of war.

Besides, Civ3 is anything but an accurate representation of history.

The only problem with this is that the AI doesn't normally use the luxury slider, so it helps only the human player.

The Republic is already the best all-round government in the game, IMHO. No need to make it even stronger.

The Name coloseum should at least be changed once you reach the middle ages, in a theater, .... it is ridiculous to build a coloseum in the modern Era....
It might make even more sense replacin gthe coloseum by a theater and making the Coloseum a small wonder increasing Happiness in all of your cities, maybe becoming obsolete once you can buikd cathedrals to show the chnage of mentality about the arena fights.... I think I'll mod this....

no its not, in the U.S there are coloseums, the just are used for our sports venues as opposed to Gladiatorial matches... but they are still around, still being built

I like the idea about replaceing the colloseum with a theatre, though an ampitheatre would be better,as it was used for both sports, and plays, and considering that we still have colloseums, if it was made a wonder or small wonder, its benifits should last forever :)

@Xen: thx for the info, I see what you mind, maybe theater/amphiteater should be added as an extra City Improvement, while the coloseum should be renamed after the middleages to a sport arena....
The small Wonder Coloseum would be like the Great Coloseum in Rome, increasing the effect of the small ones in the cities....
