Was it huge map? How civs and level? The link did not say, it did give the date. It is unusual to see a seafaring civ take over a large continent. I wonder if that had any influence on the ship building?

Standard map, but for some strange reason England and the Arabs had that continent by themselves. My continent had 6 civs in the same amount of space. It made for plenty of luxuries, but took a lot of warring to gain some elbow room. England always had tons of ships, but for some reason built a bunch of destroyers to replace their MoWs. I know whenever I play as the Byzantines, England is my usual nemesis, and this was no exception. I'm sure I can find a late game save that illustrates their naval madness.
Thanks Overseer, that is what I would figure. Emp with most on your side to keep you busy and someone rolling over the other continent.
