How fast can you get it without using Military Tradition?

Galleass can get wiped out with a 2nd barrage from a city (if garrisoned w/ crossbow). So to play it safe you have to heal them after every hit. If you wait until you have an armory your almost at Navigation so really you have to produce them w/ Barracks.

My suggestion:

Would it be OP to have galleass' be able to move after they fire?

I think that almhanda building, barracks, armory, military academy and a bradenburg will guarantee you four promos right out the gate, or five if your unit have a free promo on it.

In current game progress, its a inland capital so no ubar ships of death for me but, eh, airplanes and soldiers is better than nothing.

I could have land troops with triple rough land promos and actually choose the 4th promo on whatever I want, march or whatever, march I tend to pick march cuz of its usefulness for default defenders. But, I could easily crank out bombers with air repair right out the gate meaning my bombers dont' have to halt to standby right away....

Even without the right buildings you won't be able to have frigates with logistics right out of the gate. You need 100XP. But all the way up to Brandenburg gate will give you only the first 3; targeting or bombardment. Also it is more cheaper (turns vs purchase cost) to build galleasses and then upgrade them to frigates. Again you don't want to waste too much time building xp buildings. You are better off with frigates as soon as you get them and kicking some AI ass. Since if you don't start early you will need to wait till Battleships. In addition range may be a better early promotion for frigates as the three range is much better then logistics but that is of course IMHO.

The two shots are good but even with logistics frigates have drawback.
- They don't often have sufficient movement meaning that even with logistics shuffling is a pain.
- Having range ensures you can get more ships in range of the city and use other melee ships as more efficient meat shields. This is really essential when towards the latter period of approaching battleships when enemy cities can almost one-shot frigates.
- Having range ensures that you don't need to get your ships to heal immediately you don't have to break the attack.
- Range can be acquired much earlier; I believe at Level 2 Bombardment/Targeting.

That being said you are entitled to your choice. But with making very little experience without Military Tradition and probably have one or two xp building in your shipbuilding city it may take as many as 35 to 40 attacks to reach logistics as opposed the 10-15 to reach range.

Why not take a mix? Front line ships to fire twice, rear line ships to fire over them.

I might try the +1 range before logistics to see if it actually hurries the process along. The one thing about having your units hit a few times is they DO gain small amounts of exp from it.

And once you have logistics you won't get hurt unless they send a privateer out after you.

I usually go the following:

1. Navy/Bomb 1
2. Navy/Bomb 1
3. Navy/Bomb 1
4. Logistics
5. Range
6. Sight
7. Movement
8. Bomb/Navy 1/2/3

I play small maps so never really need the anchor.

Just started my first marathon earth game w/ Theadora.

After about 400 turns I have a fully upgraded fleet of dromons.

The upgrade to Galleass' right!?
