The diplomacy AI is definitely buggy

I'm playing at the third level of difficulty, it's about 1590 AD. I'm playing the Arabs and have been fairly nonaggressive.

I have just built my first boat and put a settler on it.
I head out to the next near continent (no ocean travel possible).
I make first contact (by boat) with India (Gandhi, friendly).
He asks for peace, I agree.
I ask for his maps and, in exchange, I give him my maps.
I click on "What can I do to make this work?" (however it's worded).
He comes up with a counter offer: My maps for his maps PLUS 60 gold.
NOW he is cautious.

What is he mad at me for?

He isn't mad, he's cautious...as he should be.

Once you get some trading going, share the same religion, he'll become more friendly.
You can expect him to throw a party should because you've met and didn't kill him.
Trust grows over time and needs to be cultured. :)

Actually, when I saw the headline to this thread, I thought it was describing my observation about the AI. ;) Here goes:

In one turn, a culture (say, the Romans) asks me to cancel all deals, say with the vile French. I refuse, and I get a "penalty" for this (something like "you refused to...etc."). In the next turn, I declare war on the French, and suddenly the Romans tell me "you declared war on our friend". I'd call that a bug in the AI. Either the French are the friends of the Romans, or they are their enemies. They can't be both.

Yeah, that happened too. I just figured the AI program was nitpicky. I don't think there are many peaceniks at Firaxis.

Hm. When I saw the title of this thread, I was sure someone had the same funny thing happen that I did. It seems like a bug.

When I'm at war with someone, to make peace they will demand a technology. In CivIII you had to take it or leave it. In CivIV, I switch it, and demand a technology from them. I then get a message from the game saying that we can't trade, only one player can give a tribute, and then peace is declared.

Seems buggy to me... It is possible it's supposed to do that?

Presumably, in the turn where rome asked you to cancel deals with the French, he was trying to stay out of their political clutches. However, you refuse so he had to agree to whatever thumbscrews the French were using - this probably caused him to now "like" them:mischief:

In the next turn, you declare war on France so he stands up for his new "buddy";)

Yeah, that's a bug. Someone reported it earlier. Also, note that the AI will always accept whatever the offer is later, which means you can take all their stuff if you want it. It's a rather broken bug.

BTW the point of my post was not the AIs demeanor but why it would offer me more than what I offered it. By looking at the other AI complaints, I see that this is a problem with the renegotiate button. I just got a lite version of the bug (ie-didn't get all his cities).

Asking what the AI wants seems to generate a "fair" deal. Yes, the AI should accept if you offer it far more than it would need to give.
