The great leap - from monarchy to emperor - still not making it.

Some of those games are especially designed to get players who are stuck on a level up to a level they desire. If you join and ask for feedback you most likely will get honest critisism on what you did right and what you did wrong.

Don't be nervous.

Well, maybe I try one. Thanks. I've already said many "thanks" in this thread, but must say again. I really appreciate that you more experienced players want to help others :) .

First of all, RM is right. Don't be nervous, we're all here to play the game, discuss it, and have fun. Personally I love the SG's, as with Scoutsout, my play is greatly improved by them.

All I would say is that if you think a game may be beyond your level, just state that in your sign up post. If you want more honest evaluation of your moves, state that as well. If the host feels the he needs all very strong players (a rarity), then they'll tell you so. Those games are usually easy to pick out though, they're on diety with some wacky variant that looks like suicide to us mere mortals. What's more, I find that I can easily play 1-2 levels higher than normal in a SG as you tend to think out every move much more. It changes things completely when you aren't the only one who suffers from a bad decision.

Come on down to the SG froum, I promise we won't bite. ;)

There's a real gem there - that describes many of us playing SG's.

Oh c'mon Sens, you bite. Earlier this evening I saw you bite yourself. :p ;)

[dance] I Did, I Beat Emperor For The First Time

Yesterday I achieved my first emperor victory with Poland (mod, religious and militaristic, UU 5-3-2 hussar replacing knight). I previously told about my game as Iroquois which was going fine, but had I problems with my computer and the save was lost :( .

This was a random, standard, continents, 70 % ocean map with all victory conditions expect space race turned on.

I started on the SE corner of the eastern continent. Other civ's on that continent were Zululand, Spain, Rome and Persia. On the western continent were Arabia, Egypt and India.

I headed for monarchy because of my starting techs. I was able to trade the techs to the other civ's well. I desperately tried to contact other continent, and sent about ten suicide galleys and finally made it. This gave me a nice amount of gold to upgrade my warriors to swordmen and invade Zululand.

Right after that in the beginning of the middle ages I made military alliance with Persia against Rome. Persia kept Roman forces busy and I managed to get most of their cities.

The next war was against Persia when the cavalry arrived. That war was quite easy, and only one civ, Spain was left on my starting continent (of course I took all money and techs from those other civs before destroying them).

The war against Spain was fought with cavalry, infantry and artillery. It took quite a long time because many of their cities were large.

Then it was time to land on the western continent and start war against Arabia, which was controlling the whole continent. I landed in three spots with my forces of cavalry, infantry and artillery. I didn't attack their core, but the area owned by India originally. Those cities were smaller and not so heavily defended.

Finally 1808 AD I reached domination limit and that was my first emperor victory :) . Of course I undestand this was just first win, so I'm still far from a solid emperor player. But this gave me more selfconfidence to see I'm able to do it.

Congratulations!

Domination on Emperor is impressive for a first victory. Did you struggle, was in deep trouble at some moment or even on the brink of giving up ? If not: well done !! If you were: Greatly done !!.
There are always some victoried that are remembered by an individual (also true about some defeats) and this is one victory you will remember.

Advise: Play SG's now and also play Solo-Emperor a couple of times until you are sure you've mastered it. Then jump up to Deity (if you only have Vanilla Civ) or Demigod (if you have C3C).

1 remark though: why are your cities on wealth ? You don't seem to need a lot more money and you are still researching. There are better things to build than wealth ...

Thanks scoutsout and Rick Meleet :) .

@Rick

I think the most difficult part was the war against Rome. Although I had alliance with Persia, those bigger Roman cities were well defended. I lost many of my troops. Also one of the cities I captured flipped, and that really hurt, because I had many units in it. Chivalry and the arrival of my UU Hussar + golden age saved me.

The invasion of Arabia was easier than I thought, the plan to attack those weak under 12 pop cities instead of the core was a right choice. Once I got the invasion started, I knew I would win this.

One key to success was also the amount of leaders I got (playing PTW). So I was able to rush FP in a great location quite early, build armies, ToE etc.

Many of my cities are on wealth, because I needed money to rush cultural buildings after the war against Arabia to achieve the domination limit faster. There really was no need to build any more military units or improvements on my starting continent.

Yes, this will definitely be a win I'll remember :) . But this was just my first win, I really need much more experience before moving up to deity.
