Sommerswerd asked me to change this
I am looking for specific advice about which theatre style couch to buy, but figured it might spark more discussion about home movie theatre setups you guys might have or fancy.
The deal is that it's almost time for the world cup, so I need a couch for downstairs to watch the games on. I found a couple from Costco that look great, and delivery takes 2-5 weeks, but is free.. I have no idea whether any of these would actually fit through the sliding door, which is the only door they can go in through, but I already emailed them asking for specific clearance dimensions. Just based on what's on their site it seems like I might have to figure out how to take the sliding door out to get any of these beasts in, but it's got to be possible somehow.
Anyway, here's the exact layout of the basement with the 3 options penciled in.. with the couches put in side by side, so it's easier to compare the dimensions: (I did this in sketchup, so it's all to scale. Sketchup does this "perspective" thing, which is why the lines aren't straight)
The opening at the top is the door to the hallway that takes you to the stairs going upstairs to the livingroom. The door opens inwards, to the left. The opening in the bottom left corner is the sliding door to the lower outside deck and the backyard.
The lines on the left signify where the TV is hung on the wall. It's not ideal to have it by the sliding door, but it's the only place where it fit - there are windows on other walls.
You can see couches A, B, and C.
A is a Silver Screen 3
B and C are both Cinema II brands, one with 4 seats, and one with 3.
As you can see, the 4 seat thing is almost a tight fit, and it'd have to go behind the door (up top, need 30 inch clearance or so, there's only 22, so it needs to be far enough, pretty much where it is in the image), so that it doesn't get in the way. It doesn't seem to be a problem, but do I really need 4 seats? 3 might be fine, and the extra room might actually be very welcome.
I'm not sure about the 2 brands or which one is better. The Silver Screen 3 one comes with 4 seats too, but that is just too large. It is also slightly curved, so people get a better view, as opposed to the Cinema II brand, which is straight. The leather on both brands seems to be of a worthy variety, a couple online reviews claimed as much anyway.
As you can see in the image, the 4 seater (which looks imposing and awesome) would have the centre of the TV not aligned to any specific seat.. meaning you'd have to look slightly to the left or right.. Mind you the TV is a 60 inch plasma one, so it's large.. so it shouldn't really make a difference, but it's a factor I'm keeping in mind. The 3 seaters can be centered. I suppose the TV is on a bracket that can be moved around as well, so this actually might not be an issue at all.
The 4 seater also has to be further back, which is another factor. The place it is placed in the picture, which is the closest you could put it to the TV, is 126 inches away from that wall, which is 3.2 metres. It seems to work okay in terms of ideal distance to the TV, but it seems like having it a bit closer might make things better. Both 3 seaters definitely give you more flexibility here, as they can be placed a lot closer.
I wouldn't want to have the couch any further back than the 4 seater in the image, as there needs to be enough room behind the couch to place a foosball table, and at some point in the future a bar. Plus there needs to be enough room to get by. In the image above there are about 22 inches from the 4 seater to the top wall (the one with the door to the hallway). That's almost cutting it close, but should be good enough for "getting by to get to the foosball table or bar" space.
I'm looking at these 3 options and I have no idea what to do. I'm going to sleep on it and order one of them soon, so that it can arrive early enough in the world cup. If it ends up coming for just the final I won't really care I guess, there is a couch down there already, so there is a backup plan in place (for the world cup). This has turned into a "for the future" and "for the future enjoyment of warpus in terms of movie and tv show watching.. and sporting events too!" tyep thing as opposed to "I need a couch for the world cup" I guess, because I'm lazy and I started looking into it way too late.
I'll also need to buy some sort of a coffee table or ottoman, but I guess probably coffee table so you can put stuff on it? And if I go with a 3 seater, maybe something to put on the sides, like little tables you could put things on? If you're wondering about the floor, it's got 8 inch thick panels put in that resemble hardwood. Freshly painted room, new curtains put in last year. I'm pretty happy with how the room is turning out, it used to have an old smelly rug and yellow walls. Even the baseboards are fancy, I ended up finding taller ones on a deal when that was all put in.
Any recommendations, thoughts, or even posts of your own layouts, if you have any sort of a "movie theatre" like setup anywhere in your house.. or your parents house.. or wherever, are welcome. I need to sleep on this and figure it out so anything you say will probably help in the process. I don't usually splurge on big purchases like this, I'm usually a frugal guy who once a year or so drops the money he's saved up on a trip.. but this year there is no big trip, so this is well in my budget for a "one time splurge". I want something that will last me a while and look nice, and be comfy. Help! (I'll consider alternatives from other places, but costco has free delivery, i know that the quality of the product is going to be good, and the price seems to be reasonable. Keep in mind that these are Canadian dollars too, and that things cost more here than in the U.S.)
The plan is to also put a bean bag type chair just to the left of the door up top. It wouldn't be a great angle, but a 4th (or 5th) seat in the room would come in handy.
The top left (or bottom left) corner will also have a sitting area for the resident dog, Sable. She definitely needs a seat of her own.
I'm not sure what else I need to keep in mind in terms of a home theatre, other than future speakers and wiring. I want those to be mounted on walls, so that they don't get in the way.
K that's enough text from me, I apologize about the wall of text. Get back to me with any feedback you might have, k thnx zzz
