I am looking for specific advice about which theatre style couch to buy, but figured it might spark more discussion about home movie theatre setups you guys might have or fancy.

The deal is that it's almost time for the world cup, so I need a couch for downstairs to watch the games on. I found a couple from Costco that look great, and delivery takes 2-5 weeks, but is free.. I have no idea whether any of these would actually fit through the sliding door, which is the only door they can go in through, but I already emailed them asking for specific clearance dimensions. Just based on what's on their site it seems like I might have to figure out how to take the sliding door out to get any of these beasts in, but it's got to be possible somehow.

Anyway, here's the exact layout of the basement with the 3 options penciled in.. with the couches put in side by side, so it's easier to compare the dimensions: (I did this in sketchup, so it's all to scale. Sketchup does this "perspective" thing, which is why the lines aren't straight)

The opening at the top is the door to the hallway that takes you to the stairs going upstairs to the livingroom. The door opens inwards, to the left. The opening in the bottom left corner is the sliding door to the lower outside deck and the backyard.

The lines on the left signify where the TV is hung on the wall. It's not ideal to have it by the sliding door, but it's the only place where it fit - there are windows on other walls.

You can see couches A, B, and C.

A is a Silver Screen 3

B and C are both Cinema II brands, one with 4 seats, and one with 3.

As you can see, the 4 seat thing is almost a tight fit, and it'd have to go behind the door (up top, need 30 inch clearance or so, there's only 22, so it needs to be far enough, pretty much where it is in the image), so that it doesn't get in the way. It doesn't seem to be a problem, but do I really need 4 seats? 3 might be fine, and the extra room might actually be very welcome.

I'm not sure about the 2 brands or which one is better. The Silver Screen 3 one comes with 4 seats too, but that is just too large. It is also slightly curved, so people get a better view, as opposed to the Cinema II brand, which is straight. The leather on both brands seems to be of a worthy variety, a couple online reviews claimed as much anyway.

As you can see in the image, the 4 seater (which looks imposing and awesome) would have the centre of the TV not aligned to any specific seat.. meaning you'd have to look slightly to the left or right.. Mind you the TV is a 60 inch plasma one, so it's large.. so it shouldn't really make a difference, but it's a factor I'm keeping in mind. The 3 seaters can be centered. I suppose the TV is on a bracket that can be moved around as well, so this actually might not be an issue at all.

The 4 seater also has to be further back, which is another factor. The place it is placed in the picture, which is the closest you could put it to the TV, is 126 inches away from that wall, which is 3.2 metres. It seems to work okay in terms of ideal distance to the TV, but it seems like having it a bit closer might make things better. Both 3 seaters definitely give you more flexibility here, as they can be placed a lot closer.

I wouldn't want to have the couch any further back than the 4 seater in the image, as there needs to be enough room behind the couch to place a foosball table, and at some point in the future a bar. Plus there needs to be enough room to get by. In the image above there are about 22 inches from the 4 seater to the top wall (the one with the door to the hallway). That's almost cutting it close, but should be good enough for "getting by to get to the foosball table or bar" space.

I'm looking at these 3 options and I have no idea what to do. I'm going to sleep on it and order one of them soon, so that it can arrive early enough in the world cup. If it ends up coming for just the final I won't really care I guess, there is a couch down there already, so there is a backup plan in place (for the world cup). This has turned into a "for the future" and "for the future enjoyment of warpus in terms of movie and tv show watching.. and sporting events too!" tyep thing as opposed to "I need a couch for the world cup" I guess, because I'm lazy and I started looking into it way too late.

I'll also need to buy some sort of a coffee table or ottoman, but I guess probably coffee table so you can put stuff on it? And if I go with a 3 seater, maybe something to put on the sides, like little tables you could put things on? If you're wondering about the floor, it's got 8 inch thick panels put in that resemble hardwood. Freshly painted room, new curtains put in last year. I'm pretty happy with how the room is turning out, it used to have an old smelly rug and yellow walls. Even the baseboards are fancy, I ended up finding taller ones on a deal when that was all put in.

Any recommendations, thoughts, or even posts of your own layouts, if you have any sort of a "movie theatre" like setup anywhere in your house.. or your parents house.. or wherever, are welcome. I need to sleep on this and figure it out so anything you say will probably help in the process. I don't usually splurge on big purchases like this, I'm usually a frugal guy who once a year or so drops the money he's saved up on a trip.. but this year there is no big trip, so this is well in my budget for a "one time splurge". I want something that will last me a while and look nice, and be comfy. Help! (I'll consider alternatives from other places, but costco has free delivery, i know that the quality of the product is going to be good, and the price seems to be reasonable. Keep in mind that these are Canadian dollars too, and that things cost more here than in the U.S.)

The plan is to also put a bean bag type chair just to the left of the door up top. It wouldn't be a great angle, but a 4th (or 5th) seat in the room would come in handy.

The top left (or bottom left) corner will also have a sitting area for the resident dog, Sable. She definitely needs a seat of her own.

I'm not sure what else I need to keep in mind in terms of a home theatre, other than future speakers and wiring. I want those to be mounted on walls, so that they don't get in the way.

K that's enough text from me, I apologize about the wall of text. Get back to me with any feedback you might have, k thnx zzz

Where are your guests going to put their munchies? You need space for plates of sandwiches, meat/fruit/veggie/cheese platters, chips, dips, or whatever else they'll be eating, and situated so they don't knock over their drinks when reaching for the food.

I see none of the examples you've posted have anywhere to keep a plate, so you'll also need a few small tables.

There will be a coffeetable in front of the couch, and in the case of one of the 3 seaters also probably 1 small table to the left or right, probably left. The couches have cupholders and storage areas, but no place to put plates.. but that's alright, you don't have a table at amovie theatre even. So no dinners will be consumed there, but popcorn, wings, snacks, etc. will work, as they will be set up on the coffee table and guests can hold bowls of stuff in their hands.

Once I decide on the couch I will update the sketchup with where I'd want everything, including the bean bag chair, coffee table, dog bed, foosball table, etc.

I've been mulling over this.. and I think the 4 seat option is out of the running:

oydY7ag.jpg

It would work, but everything is just so tight. The couch is actually the middle rectangle part, the smaller rectangles on the left and right is the maximum extension when everybody leans allll the way back. I've also subdivided the couch into individual sitting sections, so it's better to see who would sit where.

Everything in the images is to scale, I measured the foosball table, the coffee table I have upstairs, tv stand I found online, etc. I even measured the dog.

I looked up optimal distance to a 60 inch TV, and there's a lot of disagreement there it seems... but on average people seem to say that it should be closer rather than futher away.. Different companies suggest different ranges, but what I have in the above picture is near the max or beyond the max of what everyone says is ideal.

So it seems like the couch would be too far from the tv. It could be moved in closer a bit, and I could have a rule for the right-most seat.. as in "watch out with the door and all, whoever is sitting in the right-most seat.." .. but that seems stupid.

The other option is this: (technically there are two 3-seat couches I'm considering, but this one is wider and it seems like it would fill in the room better.. and give everyone more room. and this one is the one that I read reviews of - the other one I couldn't find any for. It's also newer, if what the lady at the other end of the email is saying is true. so it seems like I should go with it instead of the other one)

So instead of

I would have

And the seat in the top left corner by the dog I spec'd out is this thing from IKEA.

Nobody else seemed to have a cheap comfy small seat that would fit in that space.

The 3 seat option seems like the way to go, but what do I know.. Am I doing this planning my layout thing right? I haven't even considered any sound considerations. For now I'm going to be using the TV's native sound things, I will have to buy speakers at some point in the future when I feel like upgrading stuff. I figure I'll just put them up on walls, but again, I don't really know what I'm doing.

edit: I completely forgot about the future bar. The second option gives me enough room while the first one would.. make it a bit cramped. I have no idea how big I want the bar to be, but I want to turn the closet into some cool storage area for booze.. or until then blue ray and/or dvd and/or video game media? and the bar would sort of connect into that somehow. That's the plan anyway. Either way it seems like if I want the bar, I need to go with the 3 seater. Problem solved? Might as well order tomorrow? Let's see what future warpus says I guess..

I wouldn't recommend pushing beyond the optimal. I have a TV at about optimal and watching it can get rather tiring.

Personally, I'd say save your money and go for just a 3 seat option. If you're too good to sit on the floor during a party, then you're not worthy of going to a party.

Yeah, this is likely what I'm doing. I guess it's just that the 4 seater looked like it was actually going to fit, until I started pencilling everything else in, including the way the door swivels..

There will be enough room for an extra seat on the left, right in front of the sliding door. That's good solid seating with a good view of the TV for 5, even if the 5th seat is just going to be a regular chair. That's good enough for me. Usually it's just me and my roommate anyway, and 1 visitor is what we get most often.

I'm waiting on an email with dimensions of the boxes the parts of the couch come in.. Each seat basically is its own piece - then you assemble them. I need to make sure they'll fit in through the sliding door, but I'm pretty sure they will. They told me Costco will come back and pick up the couch if it doesn't fit, for free...

So I guess I'm probably ordering this thing later today!

K I just put in an order for the Silver Screen 3 seater. It's being delivered from Toronto, so it could actually get here for the first week of the world cup! We'll see.

I even measured the dog.

How likely is it that the person in the chair by the dog might get hit by the door?

You mentioned a bean-bag chair in your OP. Or you could consider a comfy folding chair (wood, not metal).

Aw, thank you!

I don't travel these days, but I'll gladly be there in spirit. Please give your dog an ear scratch from me. :)
