The Mid-Evil Times: TMET

Hey Paasky, great job on the scenario! I'm sorry I haven't given any responses so far. I almost never go into the completed scenarios forum and didn't realize that you released the final version.

I think having a Europe map version would be good, but I really like that semi-random map you originally have been using. I guess just keep two versions?

Yes, after a few patches I'll have the semi-random, semi-random MP, random (& MP), Europe & Europe MP.

There's still a few things to change before the first patch. Mainly the civilopedia, which I forgot to update as I updated everything else... So I'll have to check all of it.

I've managed to balance, especially the tech tree, for the random map very well, as most of the world changed into the Middle Ages around 950AD.

Well, .... yes!
But: It crashes while trying to load because the rules are not yet completely done, nor is the civilopedia, or the city sizes/improvement placement. Perhaps "by the end of this week" would be a good date to look forward to ;)

A question just popped into my head: Should the Bosphorus (small waterway between the Black- & Mediterranean Seas) be passable by foot or not? Even though it is passable by foot in (almost) every other scenario, should I make it passable only by ships?

Paasky: Damn good job sir! :salute: I don't play a great deal but I do get interested in the mods/scens and rev them up now and again. I'm dropping in here to comment on your map mainly.

Firstly, I have to say to Lou Long and TLC, put a polite sock in it. The mix of magic, imagination and history is totally FINE IMO, preferred even. If you don't like some imagination in the scen, then make your own historically accurate one, which you have done, so great. Personally I see less point in you putting down the scen, than it being imaginative. I fully support Paasky's decision and it opens up far more potential for modders than the strict historical jobs.

Secondly, where did you get the map that you are using? I don't recognise it. I am currently in the process of doing an extensive history of map making and cartography in the History Forum. It is called “Imago Mundi” (The Image of the World). I will be dealing with a lot of material about medieval maps and even the maps of your scen's period.

If you, or any other modder / map maker out there, require particular maps from the Middle Ages, I have a great big fat collection which I am drip feeding to the history forum. It would be quite easy to pull out particular areas and time periods of maps for you or them. In fact, the majority of the maps from this period ARE imaginative renderings of the world and people's world view during these times was heavily distorted as a result. In short, both the cartographers and the people of those age did NOT see the world in geographical terms.

EDIT: In fact here are some thumbnails to click on for some medieval maps. I can't be bothered to put captions under them. They range through your time period though. Click the thread link above to find out more detail on these maps:

Atleast they gave me some input. And as the masses (well, 3 people :p) want an Europe map, I'll do an Europe map ;)

You mean the map in civ (enlargened & edited the one in Napoleonic Europe) or the Globe map of Europe (took a screenshot of Google Earth & added the colours)?

Hihii, funny looking old maps :) We have come a long way...

Well if you've got something on the whereabouts of the numerous tribes, where they ended up and what became of them later, it would be most appreciated ;)

Paasky: True, all input is appreciated at the end of the day :)

- I meant the map under the 'screenshots' heading in your OP. Nothing like any map I've seen before.

- Which tribes do you mean? You seem to have made a few changes through the course of the thread, so it's hard to see which ones you are referring to. The OP details are quite different to what has come since, and I am now unsure whether you have gone with a more historically accurate map and gameplay or stayed 'imaginative'.

That one came from my head :D Drew it in Paint, then edited the palette, created a map with bmp2bic and then edited into what it is now.

Well... Both. The original Scenario has got the first 15 civs of civ3, as does the random map wich is almost complete. The Europe Scenario is something I've been working on for about 2 weeks now. The first version, which I'm planning on releasing this week, will simply have slightly edited rules from the original scenario. I think that I'll be adding more units/improvements/resources when I find the time & will to do so.

OK well I will keep looking in. Good luck with it all. If you need some funky maps, you know where to come ;).

OK, version 1.1 is up! But (there's always a but) the Europe version did not make it, as I haven't been doing it that much. Actually it only requires the new civs to get their leaderheads to work & to input the new unit/improvement stats found in the 3 other scenarios. Shows just how lazy I am ;)

Here's the link for the patch
