I was playing a simple game at easy level as China, as a result of two wars with my neighbours I had expanded my borders significantly and ended up as the largest civilization on the continent and started experiencing the jelousy effect where most other civs regard you badly whatever you do.

On two separate occasions, much smaller neighbours to me started moving noticable numbers of troops towards my city, at first I ignored them as asking them to leave had the alternative was war, but then once in position they declare war and start attacking.

Now my civ was plainly larger than theirs, even considering their overseas assets, but it did occur that these happeneded when I started downsizing my fighting units and adopting a defensive posture.

I suppose it was possible that these smaller neighbours had an outsized military, maybe I should have noted the "their army is the same size as ours" warnings from The General, is this an indication that the neighbour might want to have a go ?

How do you keep smaller "mouse" neighbours in check, many of my games have been spoiled because I was unable to contain a domino effect leading up to "You versus the rest".

Bribe the neutral AIs first into fighting on your side - at the very least, you won't have to fight them for awhile. Sometimes they too will drag others into helping them; thus creating a domino effect on your behalf.

2nd - built up your military. Never disband your military - only thing the AI respects is pure naked offensive striking power. ;) For now, you'll have to defend but go on the offensive once you're certain of your military might. Strike down the AI one at a time. ;)

BTW, welcome to CFC. :) Seems like I'd been saying that a lot....

Thanks, also I just found this in the FAQ - doh !

The AI keeps attacking because I have a weak military - but they only have outdated units!

The AI counts workers as units, too, and will go for sheer numbers. the only thing you can do is try to keep up in numbers.

Surprisingly, some 'cheap' units proved very effective in combat if used correctly, e.g. longbowmen. Start thinking of hoards of longbowmen + Musketmen instead of the expensive Knights!

In my case I had exclusively Swordsmen and Musketmen, as the former couldn't be upgraded I started getting rid of them and built a couple of Universities as a result.

P.S. I've been here a year actually, with a post rate of 1/month !

If you have PTW, swords can now be upgraded to med infantry and later on to guerillas. ;)

I think after one of the patches, workers are no longer considered in calculation of your military might...

Good.

Otherwise industrious civs would be viewed as weaker because in general they have less units
