The Official Mac Civ3 Editor Thread

Jaguar is free to teachers for a limited time. I just received it free last week. I now have to copies of jaguar and am looking to sell one, possibly eBay where I bought my first jaguar for $72.

Re: editor ---> I keep getting unexpected quite errors. I know its not the same as the PC version, but I was expecting the start scfeen to be blue ocean tiles, not solid white. I'm unable to place terrain tiles, nor access units to make adjustments. Any advice out there?

dojoboy, did you mess around with you civ3mod.bic file? maybe a reinstall is the cure.. I've had no problems using the editor in 10.2.4 running on a 733 G4...

:nono: You didn't read the readme, did you?

You must place the Civ3Edit app directly in your Civ 3 folder. Not in any other folders, etc. It will then be able to read the terrain correctly, and display it as the PC version does.

First I have to give major kudos to Brad for coming up with the editor and sticking with us Mac users.

I've been a long time watcher, but this is my first post. I figured I'd add my two cents as to what I've experienced with the editor.

1. No, the editor doesn't work in any form of 10.1. I have 10.1.4 on my Quicksilver G4 and it unexpectantly quit every time. On my 500mhz IBook running 10.2 I had no problem. So, that seems to be the answer to that one.

2. Any created scenarios in the editor won't work with 1.71g. Yes I was lazy and didn't feel like updating, plus I could use the multi trick if I wanted to see the whole map. Updating to 1.21g fixed the problem.

I've also had some issues with the Player Start which I'll put in my next post.

Let me just get this straight: we have a scenario editor, but we can't place units or cities of civilizations? Isn't that a large part of any scenario editor? I can't really establish a "scenario" of WWII, or anything like that, can I? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, once you place a Player Starting Point, how do you get rid of it? Is it possible? I would like to randomly generate a map and then customize it with starting points, resources, etc, but it already places the starting points on there. Thanks.

Of course I did, you silly boy. ;) Now what?

 Ok. If the app is directly in your civ 3 folder (not any subfolders, etc etc), it should be displaying correctly. Since it's not, either all your civ 3 files are missing, or you put it somewhere it doesn't belong.

Re new buttons/icons: Almost finished. Just the Scenario properties and player properties buttons left.

Uh, well,... I kind of had it in the CivEdit subfolder. :wince: I ass-u-me-d the sub-folder was irrelevant. It now works fine.

:worshp: DnG!

A summary:

If you have Jaguar and a 300+ processor, the Editor works. If you're on 10.1 or a smaller processor it doesn't. Yeah, we've put it in the right folders.

Ok, I'm finished with the icons. They look much better now, IMHO. Any comments, suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's a screenshot.

Has anyone had any success with Player Start positions? All I want to do is fix one Start position to one Player, me, and let the computer start locations to be random? The doesn't seem to be a way to distinguish between one start position and the other???

In this version, no. I believe there is no way to distinguish which player will start where, only determine the overall starting locations.

Btw: I noticed this thread was sticked for a couple of minutes, and then was unstickied. Just kinda curious why you stickied/unsticked it.
hehe... and I thought no one would notice.... :D

I was not very sure about sticking this thread. First I stuck it because it's an important thread, then decided to unstuck it after a few minutes because it's not necessary. This thread should remain in the first page anyway and people generally don't like to have too many stickies. :p

 I understand completely. Yeah, the thread will most likely stay on the first page, at least until we get all the major bugs out of the editor ;). And I agree, we do have enough stickies already. Some people also tend to ignore stickies (the FAQ and Newbie thread, for example, in General Discussion).

Great icons, DiamondzAndGunz. As soon as we fix the 10.1 issue, I look forward to you sharing them.

After looking at it some more, I think you're right, thanks.

I'm just glad to have something to work with.

The requirements in the readme only state a processor speed of 300 MHz.. nothing about 10.1.x vs Jaguar (10.2) are mentioned. And, IIRC, Brad said this was done pre-jaguar...so Jaguar shouldn't be a requirement.

I wonder if overclocking my G3/233 will let me run it. I can't upgrade my Gossamer to jaguar until I 1) replace the RAM and 2) upgrade my processor.

Hello, DnG. Somewhere between playtesting and icon making, you have discovered 25-hour days!

Just poking around with the editor on other maps to learn the what's and how's, but I noticed that if you open some maps, should you into the the resource editor (fish/cattle/etc.), the cattle often turns into fish
Odd. What kind of maps does this happen on? Blank maps, or maps that have already been created...? It seems fine for me; I can add cattle to grassland/plains without it turning to fish.
There were two:
1.) Earth [Real - Terrain].bic
and
2.) Marla Singer's World Map.bic
Don't know what version the map/scenarios were saved at though, so that might be an issue. Just trying to save a couple steps -- don't want to rebuild the entire planet (on huge), so I thought I'd study what had been done before. But I guess that's what Civ is all about: reinventing the wheel on every game...
:D

last DnG note: Nice icons. Vision still blurry, so no critique/analysis yet, but nice contribution to the MacCiv community. Thanks, amigo.

Ok, well, I tried it out on Marla's, and... nope. I get cattle, not fish. Hmm. Don't know what could be the problem; We might just have to wait until Brad gets here to fix that.

Thanks guys. Yes, I plan to share them, just as soon as Brad gets back here and checks them out.
