The editor is almost unusable on my iBook 500mhz G3. It flies pretty well, however, on my MDD Dual 1Ghz with 1.5 RAM.
i have observed that when editing improvements or units that access the civilopedia that the field appears to be empty on the first one. Example: under that Natural Resources Tab, choosing Horses as the resource, the Civilopedia Entry is blank, but all succeeding entries, for gold, etc., the civilopedia entry box has a value in it. This also occured on the settler.
The player props button seems to clear all fields and does not maintain selections chosen under it.
i have observed that the city name boxes and leader boxes add more words to existing names, this has been noted earlier, but i just wanted to second that to make note that the bug is observed on more than one system.
i have also observed that the editor is incredibly stable. i have even been running other programs (the help file on one screen, and am writing this in my web browser on another, and listening to itunes) while using the editor on my center screen. It has not crashed a single time. This, i observed, could not be said for the same editor on the PC. However, my game itself does not seem to be so stable.
My edited maps crash my Civ III game app. i wonder if this might be due to deleted fields from the editor that the game is attempting to access? i have noticed that the game crashes on startup (generally the second to third time i restart the game--in attempts to have my settler on the part of the map i want it to be on). But the game also crashed when i was playing it (by the third turn).
i am pretty sure it has something to do with the bug that deletes fields because at first attempt to try out one of my modified maps, my settler would not allow me to do anything with it. The buttons at the bottom of my game screen were gone and i could not even move it. i closed the game and opened it back up in the editor where i observed that all the information regarding the settler was missing. After correcting this by choosing options shown in the help file as a guide (it is the example) i was able to use it as normal again. However, i know for certain that i did not change this particular unit in anyway on my own. Not only were the civilopedia entries missing, but so were the values next to the buttons denoting its capabilities.
The ugly icons and even speed issues pale in comparison to being able to place units, cities, and starting points for specific civilizations. Although i take my hat off to Brad for such good work on this editor, i think this one is pretty lame compared to 1.29... however, i am not holding my breath until we see that one... it took a year to get this, i imagine Civ IV will be out and in full force by the time such an editor is released.
That said, the help file is a little less informative than the 1.29 editor help on the PC as well. In 1.29 more information is provided on results if certain values on are chosen for units that are not supposed to have them, i think.
i would like to start a Mac specific support thread to address specific questions regarding use of the editor to keep those separate, perhaps, from bug issues to help in creating mods to the game? i have not been able to find much in the PC help that i can draw from--or that answers my questions regarding unit values and such.
