The Official Mac Civ3 Editor Thread

Okay, as far as i can tell, this editor still needs some major work. Any map that i have edited crashes my game when i go to play it. i believe this is due to the editor deleting certain fields--seemingly at random. The Civilipedia entries generally get deleted (and to my knowledge they do not show back up, or at least they have not in my maps). Secondly, the values for particular items appear to get deleted, generally these are for the first unit, or item, that appears. Very disapointing.

Well, as I become more and more familiar w/ the editor, the more and more excited I get. My only question is if I save a unit alteration or Great Wonder alteration, does it change the mod.bic? I've copied the original and placed the copy in a separate folder for safe keeping. Is this the long and short of it?

A quick question.

When will Brad be back? Monday, i would suppose.

And is it just me or does this guy look like he's enjoying being spanked? :spank:

Its just you. ;) Brad is, in some respects, our liason to mac-gaming publishers. He is able to communicate the view from both sides. Concerning the new editor, there is no way a group of BTs could find all the quirks compared to the public.

Depends. If you load the civ3mod.bic in the editor and change the values, it will change the mod.bic. If you save it as a seperate file, it won't change the mod.bic. If you make a copy and put it in a safe place, nothing can go wrong :) (unless, of course you lose the file or something...).

Yeah, life happens. But it really looks like mac gamers got the shaft on this one. :( (and man it looks like he likes that paddle  )

Folks, I'm a little confused. I'm using 10.2.4 on a G4/733 with 1.5GB RAM, and Civ3Edit is sitting in my Civilization III folder. Here's what happens:

(a) Existing scenarios (such as the two Earth scenarios that come with Civ3), when opened (either from inside the editor or from drag-and-drop), crash the editor immediately.

(b) Savegames load, but with a blank map and no discernible game values.

(c) Whether I start from scratch or load a save game, rules come up blank or with strange values (ex: "Movement rate on roads: 1"). No civilizations, wonders, et. al. are listed.

(d) When I attempt to edit player properties, the dear thing just ignores me.

:crazyeye:

I should add that I can generate maps, and that the map images look just fine.

Anything come to mind?

Cheers,

Tom

a. I don't seem to have a problem with scenarios for 1.21. However, when I try to load scenarios that are for 1.29, the editor crashes. I'm not sure what could be causing it to crash if you load the included maps.

b. The editor is not supposed to be able to edit save games. It's only for editing maps.

c. That is to be expected if you try to load a saved game, I believe. However, if that happens when you start from scratch, I believe it is a bug that needs to be rectified.

d. Yes, we have found out that it tends to do that. We are still waiting for word from Brad Oliver about that.

Welcome to CFC!

Hi,
I have an editor question. I must be doing something very simple wrong.

I start the editor, make a single change to the rules (e.g., change warrior attack strength from 1 to 3), save the rules into a .bic file, and then quit the editor.

Then I start up civ3, load the .bic file I just saved, and start playing a game. When I build a warrior, it shows up as attack strength 1.

What am I doing wrong? I have the editor in the right place, I'm using the an up-to-date civ3 patch (1.21g), and am running OS 10.2.4.

-Thanks.

This is a little dissapointing, but I'm not freaking out since this is probably something stupid i did on my part. I've got 10.2 running, Civ III 1.21, and recently installed the editor in the Civ III folder. When I try to open it, it doesn't. In the dock, you can see the icon starting to appear, but then dissapearing again. Anyone else with the same problem or an answer?

Almost forgot: I read the readme, and the editor was installed in a folder in my Civ III folder. I tried openning it there, no dice, then i moved it directly into the Civ III folder, still didn't work.

I've got the same problem. I don't know if it's an issue with processor speed, or just that I've got inferior RAM. I know I can't upgrade to 10.1.5 (let alone Jaguar) until I get my beige G3 souped up a little Hopefully Brad can shed some light on this.

I got it to work. I don't know if this will help, but what i did was i got rid of the first one. I moved the Civ3edit.sit into the civ III folder, and opened it. I then put my civ III folder in my favorites menu. drag the editor, without ever opening it, to your favorites button in the window, going to the civ III folder and letting it go. Then go into your civ III folder, and try opening it.

Anyone know how to put two terrain tiles diagonally adjacent to each other but still having a strip of water between them for ships to pass through?

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. I tried it out, and had a similar problem. The editor notoriously ignores some of the changes that are made. So you may have to click the up arrow several times to get the attack up to 3. I tried getting it up to 3, i clicked it FOUR times, and when I loaded up the game, it was only at 2. You may have to experiment a little to get the attack values just right. At least until Brad can get here and fix the problem.

Sorry, It's impossible to have that sort of formation. Even when civ 3 maps are generated randomly, they can't have that. I believe in Civ 2 and other games you could do that, but in Civ 3, there will always be a narrow strip of land there, and it will not allow you to pass through it. They should implement some sort of way of distinguishing between ones that you can pass through, and ones that you cannot.

Oh well. I could've sworn I had seen that, but i guess its either due to the sleep deprivation or when i DO sleep, i had a dream [sigh].

I haven't tried the editor for too long, but it could be better. The icons are ugly, but I could deal with that if the editor had a performance and speed boost. It's ridiculously slow, and no matter how good its appearance can be made, it won't make a difference if it's not fast enough to get the job done. It takes long enough to make maps for any type of game - this editor is slow, so it probably would add an hour or so.

Well, yeah. It could definately use a speed boost (not to mentiona bunch of error fixes). I have fixed the icons somewhat as well. But the editor is definately faster than the one I run in Virtual PC, not to mention the fact that I have to start up VPC everytime I have to use it.

It took me 5-6 hours of work to implement the maps I posted. The vast majority of that was simply painting the terrain. The fact that it takes more than a second to perform a single operation on a single tile makes it VERY hard to do anything at all with it. Does anyone know how this performance compares to that of the Windows editor (not in VPC)?

Oh yes, the PC editor is much faster. Everything happens just about instantaneously, as it should. (Then again, that might just be due to the fact that I'm running a 2.8 Ghz P4 with a gig or so of RAM... :D). I have finished a map as well, a standard size archipelago map, with the terrain as all-desert. I randomly generated an archipelago map, and then painted all the terrain as desert. It didn't really take that long, actually. It certainly could've been faster, though. I'm finishing up some minor details, it should be finished soon.

IIRC, on the Civ2 editor, it was possible to copy a chunk of land and paste it to another area of the map . . . Is there any way of doing this in the CivIII editor?? Also, what happened to the the "city radius" option for land size?? And, forgive me if this one is really lame, but i've yet to figure out how to change the city names . . . in know on Civ 2 it was easy.

Overall, not too disappointed, but lack of speed and lack of editoriableness (for lack of a better word(s)) are my main sources of ire.
