The Official Mac Civ3 Editor Thread

IIRC, on the Civ2 editor, it was possible to copy a chunk of land and paste it to another area of the map . . . Is there any way of doing this in the CivIII editor?? Also, what happened to the the "city radius" option for land size?? And, forgive me if this one is really lame, but i've yet to figure out how to change the city names . . . in know on Civ 2 it was easy.

Overall, not too disappointed, but lack of speed and lack of editoriableness (for lack of a better word(s)) are my main sources of ire.

Yeah, the Civ 2 editor was much better, and had many more features. The civ 3 editor, even the PC version, is still lacking in many categories, including the ability to create really great mods/scenarios (not that some great mods havent already been created; it's just that some mods like a WWII mod are impossible, since the AI's will just make peace the next turn, due to not being able to set attitudes). I would not be surprised if some of your favorite features are missing. Currently, there is no way in the Mac/PC editor to copy chunks of land, or to have a brush w/ a city radius land size.

If you mean changing the default city names for a civ, go to the rules editor. Go down under civilizations, and it should have a list of all the city names somewhere in the middle. Note, however, people have been expiriencing problems with this; it tends to add more text to the name after you edit it, no matter what you do. We are waiting for Brad to solve this/tell us how to solve it.

There are definitely a few tweaks needed, but...

I'd just like to stop a moment and say, once again, thank God we've got an editor. You may now resume your regularaly scheduled critique.

It IS possible to hide the civ 3 editor. Option-Click the icon in the dock, and bingo. Or you can option click another application in the dock, and it will hide the running app (civ3edit) and display the app you clicked on.

Oh yes, I'm completely aware that you can hide it. It's just that you can't hide it via the Civ3Edit menu that was bugging me. Sometimes I only have one hand free, and therefore can only use the mouse. Even though that rarely happens, it is still a problem that should be rectified.

D&G, thanks for the help! I've figured out the editor a little better--though I'm still not sure why it didn't read the Earth maps--and am having a lot of fun with it.

Brad, thanks for doing this. It's definitely good to have to an editor to nag you about in the first place. :goodjob:

Cheers,

Tom

I seem to recall that I was able to hide it by clicking the hide button in the title bar - even though it was grayed out, it still worked.

There seems to be a bug. When I try editing French city names, to make them Orléans, Besançon, etc, the editor allows the new spelling, but when I press OK and then return to the French page, the accented characters are incorrectly displayed, e.g. OrlÈans. The game itself allows accented characters in city names, of course. I have not yet tried seeing what happens when I play with the new city list.

Also, on redisplaying the civilisation's page, the editor seems to add extra characters to the last selected name in for example the great leader names or the city names box. So I got CharlemagneacArthur, for instance. I deleted the extra characters, but they reappeared with slight variations when I returned to the France page.

William (Moonwizard)

got the same problem here with german and spanish special characters like "ä" "ñ" and so on.

also the colours on the civilization-edit-page. doesn't match the colours shown in the game. for example rom's default colour in the game is red, for that to happen you have to choose in the editor the colour 1 (that is BLUE??!!??).

any ideas?

and thanks to brad for the editor. :goodjob:

Is anyone else having problems saving settings for the Unit options? It seems that no matter what change I make to them they always go back to the defaults?

Never Mind, I figured it out...:crazyeye:

I need to save the .bic file and replace it with the current .bic file. I thought it would just edit the current .bic file.. Silly me :jump:

Hmm, yes. People have been having trouble with changing the unit values. If you plan to change them, you have to try and play around with it awhile to get it to work right. You have to click the up arrow to increase a value, several times sometimes, to get the desired value. Even then, though, the value displayed isn't always the same value in game. This definately should be fixed.

Hmm, wow. I just noticed that. Thanks for bringing it up. Yes, it seems as though the colors in the editor don't match what shows up in game... just like the unit values, and many of the other values in the editor. This needs to be fixed as well.. Seems like the rules editor still needs a lot of tweaking.

Ahh well, at least the primary function - map editing - seems to work without any real glitches :goodjob:

Well, no, you don't gave to do something that drastic. You could just save it as a seperate file, and then go to "Load Scenario." That will give you all the unit values that you changed- assuming that the editor actually changed them.

Maybe this should be in a separate thread, but I guess I'll start it here - do you think we could agree on a standard set of rule changes? Sort of like battleships get lethal bombardment but ironclads don't, etc. I won't have time to really get into the editor for a while (tax time), but I'd sure like to see sets of rule changes that the rest of you have come up with. Perhaps we could create a new "standard" .bic file.

Perhaps that could work. People could make their own seperate mods, we could test them out, see what rules work/don't work, and we could come up with a final version that we can use as a "standard," for succession games, training games, or just normal casual play. I'd like to do it, at least.

Since the .bic files are fairly small, they should be easy to post and swap. Maybe we could even have a competition for best new set of rules.

Brad- I have managed to use what little skills I have to fix the hide application thingy that was bugging me :). Yes, it really started to get to me, and I had way too much time on my hands. :D

Is there any way to get rid of the processor speed requirement? or at least get it so 10.1.x users can get it to start without quitting unexpectedly after the spash screen comes up?

Yeah, I did about half of the development under 10.1.x, and the other half under 10.2, so it's a bit of a surprise that it doesn't work on 10.1. I'll have a fix for this soon. Sorry about that!

I have to throw in my $.02 on this thread for Brad.

I'm weeping that it only works on OS X    :(

Sorry if its already been said before.

I'll go back to my OS 9 Civ3 game now.... *sniff*

I have a question: is it possible to place cities and units on the map using this editor? If we can't, then it greatly limits the scenarios we can come up with (no historical scenarios with Japan on their island, etc). If the editor cannot do this, is it possible to patch it so it can?

Nope. The version of the game - 1.21 - does not allow for unit or city placement. Its just a map & rules editor. You can join the list of mac users begging for a 1.29 patch.
