This is one of the strategies that I think gets mentioned a lot, but I have so far not been able to see why you would want to do this.

Can someone explain to me how moving the capital gives you an advantage? I guess it's probably due to the level I play this game on - I am a regent/monarch level player, usually with huge pangaea/continents map.

Thanks for your time.

Mik

Cities further away from the capital have more corruption, if your capital is on one side of your empire, and you do not have cities beond it, you'll have mroe corrupt cities, or less cities in the low corruption zone.

Moving the capital could help elevate this problem.

example:
say your empire layout is like Situation 1. The furthest away city is 14 tiles away.
Moving the capital, so that situation 2 forms, the furthest away city is only 8 tiles from the capital. So the total amount of corruption across your empire is less.
Code:
A=capitol
#=land tile
-=sea/ocean.
C=city

Situation 1             Situation 2

I think this was much more important in Vanilla due to optimal city placement (rings) and then the placement of the Forbidden Palace for the second ring.

In C3C, I can't remember one time where it was a good idea to change the capital or place the FP faraway. The FP is more important to be built in a city with big production/commerce capability maybe in the 2nd core.

sorry how do you move your capital
Most people simply abandon it. The next biggest city will then become the new capital automatically. Caveat: You could handbuild the palace though I've never seen anyone do it.

I moved my palace with good effect in two COTMs. When playing Conquests, the idea is always to get out of a bad region and into a good one, as Miles Teg says. I also did it in one GOTM with the same objective.

It's not as simple as that. It depends on several other factors. This article describes the mechanics. CAII will calculate it for you and tell you how much work you need to do on your chosen city before it will be the target.

Using a GL is perfectly reasonable though.

Thanks Abegweit for bringing clarity to the palace jump.
