Persia is nice civilization to play. In the list of my favorites. Good review by the way.

Persia's my fav civ. their UU's easily outclass anything in the acient age and are still one of the best units in the middle age. Thier a great, perhaps unstoppable, Jaggernaught of a civ.

But the upgrades will not be veterans. At 1/2 strength, is that really a good strategy? The mounted warrier and the geltic swordsman have a chance to retreat until they become veteran, but the immortals will just die.

Yes they will. You need a barracks to promote units, so it's entirely likely you built that barracks before starting to build warriors. Veteran units retain their Veteran status when upgraded. Only Elite units lose that status, dropping down to Veteran.
