I just read it in the newspaper:

It is 185 meters high, 2309 meters long, and the Chinese government resettled 1,3 million (!) people, as the land they lived in is now one huge lake.

Incredible. No wonder that it takes so many hammers to build

Does that mean England's Three Gorges Dam is gonna turn into gold? ;)

the dam itself is finished although they still have to install the H.E.P generators which produce the electricity.

And they are years (maybe decades) away from the techs that they need for the boat lift and lock systems.

yea cause i thought it was to finsh like 2008 or 2010 or something like that...maybe that was part of additional techs

yea that is alo of people to remove from land...did the government buy it from them or they were just forced to leave?

it's China, what do you think?;)

hmn some Chinese even claimed that China is more capitalist than Canada :goodjob:

China is currently transforming towards more marketorientation and more human rights - still I doubt that 1,3 million people could be forced to leave home in any other country

I wonder why there's so little publicity about it. Specialy when the media, in England, always seem to be pro China.

Early sucking up so when Peak Oil hits in 2012 the Chinese might go easy on London and the Brits.

Teach your children Mandarin. It might mean their survival in 20 years.

Yeah, they also have destroyed large amounts of nature and ancient chinese forts and such. They decided to place the dam in an earthquake prone area and fissures are already beginning to occur in the dam.
REALLY BRIGHT, those Chinese are.

yea i am also surprised that there is not much publicity

The reason is simple:
This project was not proposed by current chairman! It was proposed by pre-pre-prime minister.
Since the current chairman / prime minister are not the same gang of this pre-pre-prime minister, they need to "dilute" other gangs' effect over the country...

"Officially" payments were made (Washington Post did an article about it last week) but there are widespread complaints that a substantial amount of the money was misappropriated by corrupt local officials (or never appropriated in the first place). There were some protestors at the opening but they were quickly removed. The net effect, a substantial number of these people were forced off thier land with little or no compensation.

The project is extremely questionable (on so many levels; technical, political, archeological, financial, social) but the Chinese are high on engineering accomplishments at this point in their history. The current and last couple Premiere's all have engineering backrounds. That said, the flood control and power generation aspects of the project made the concept very attractive. The idea of damning the river goes back a lot farther than the current regime (or even the Communist Party).
