The right name is MOCTEZUMA, with "C", not "N"

technically, it should be Motecuhzoma.. I suppose that they use Montezuma because it is more recnognizable to their target audience

Montezuma is an older English spelling of the name, while Moctezuma is commonly used in Spanish. Motecuhzoma is the original name in Nahuatl, pronounced Mo–tekw–so–ma (four syllables), meaning "he who makes himself ruler by his rage". It comes from mo, third person possessive, tecuhtli, "lord", and zoma, "angry" or "with frown face".

Simple, It's the way it's always been spelled in America and Europe. Doesn't mean its right, just force of habit. You also may be able to account for because of translation, but I don't know how valid that is.

We are talking about the English version of the game. Montezuma is the Anglicised version of the name...therefore Montezuma is correct. If you want to translate every leader name in the game back into it's own language, then feel free.

Edit: you don't see people yelling that Alexander should be renamed "Alexandros", Caesar renamed "Gauis Julius Caesar", or for Catherine to be translated back into Cyrillic script.

Just get over it.

Wow!

So much anger over something that is probably the easiest thing to change in the whole game...

to break off on a slight tangent, anyone who enjoys ancient meso-american culture should check out the musical stylings of Cusco.. its a couple of German keyboardists, but their music is deeply inspired by their interest in ancient american music.. I would often listen to their stuff while playing as the Mayans in Civ 3

Debate about the spelling of the name of a Meso-American emperor who's been dead for 500 years?

Presumably none of these spellings are technically correct - since the Aztecs wouldn't have used the roman alphabet?

I don't think the Aztecs had invented writing, in which case spelling wouldn't have been one of their preoccupations.
