I'm sure you've all noticed the titles some leaders including yourself sometimes are given. These titles are visible on other leaders when in their diplomacy screen, and on yourself in the social policy window. The most common of these titles are Lord (or Lady if the leader is female), which all leaders bear by default.
Does anybody know what determines by what title someone is given? At first I thought The Great was given to those with outstanding military power, or perhaps the most land, as this seemed common among most with that name. But later I've discovered that even the most puny leaders in some games are also called so.
The Enlightened is another title I've seen, that I assume is associated with Science, but who knows?
Does anybody know what the basis of receiving any of these glorifying titles are?

I think it has something to do with social policy branches - I've consistently seen leaders adopt Autocracy and thereafter be referred to as "X The Terrible".

Hmm, now that you mention it... I did have both Napoleon and Gustavus being known as The Terrible, and both had Autocracy as a policy.
So I assume The Pious is for Piety, The Enlightened is for Rationalism and The Wise is for... Freedom, perhaps? :D

Yes, it's all to do with social policies... I have a vague list here.

Tradition-Lord
Liberty-Consel
Honer-The Great
Piety-The Pious
Patronage-The Enlightened
Commerce-Doge
Rationalism-The Wise
Autocracy-The Terrible
Freedom-Persident
Order-Chairman

OK, I think that's the lot. Just wait for exploration and aesthetics though.

I'm pretty sure the titles are as follows:
"Lord/Lady" for Tradition
"Consul" for Liberty
"___ The Great" for Honor
"___ The Pious" for Piety (There's a surprise!)
"Chairman" for Order
"___ The Terrible" for Autocracy
"President" for Freedom
"The Enlightened" for Rationalism
"Doge" for Commerce
And I think "The Wise" for Patronage (though I've never quite been able to figure that one out...)
You seem to end up with the title upon adopting one policy within that specific tree; just opening the tree doesn't seem to always grant you that title.

Do you know if the titles apply depending on what policy branch you adopt first, or on which policy tree you've gotten the most policies in, or some other strange set of rules?
I'd be nice if you'd be able to choose a title that way :)

It's named after the policy you picked last, so it changes throughout the game. Enlightened is for Patronage, Wise for Rationalism, not the other way around

Okay, thanks. :)
Now I will more carefully consider which policies to pick just for that awesome title x)

Hmm, the more I think about the titles, the more I want to be able to choose them at will from a list of the ones I unlocked and maybe even combine them at will.

"Lord/Lady Doge Consul President (name) the Great, Enlightened, and Wise" seems like a title I would like to have just for the fun of having a long title.

Heck, it probably could benefit from multiple options of title coming from the policy trees, such as "Prime Minister" being a title gained from Freedom. Just to rub it in, I would think it would be funny if Isabella would say her title when declaring war.

"Hello, my name is Lady Isabella the Great and Pious. Your borders are close to mine. Prepare to die."
