The Witcher

I generally try and do all of them in the more linear adventure/action RPGs since they give you experience points to level up with. Though yeah it would be nice to see most of your actions make an actual effect upon the world and people's reactions, something the majority of RPGs still lack.

I picked up the Witcher a couple of weeks back, played for an hour, maybe two, never went back. I don't want to say it was a bad game, because I really didn't enough experience with it to determine that. It just never grabbed me.
I think the crucial element here is that the game starts you basically right in the middle of the story, with tons of combat immediately. I agree that the combat was sub-par, and I think that was the main reason why I didn't play any more. Especially because I didn't make it to far enough to get engrossed in the story or characters.

havnt played witcher
becuz as I once installed Witcher enhanced I dont liked the battle mechanic

I dont think I will install it again

Finally finished this game...

Same here, finally. I agree it gets better the farther you get into the game. Trying to get all the sex cards was a pain in the ass, and I admit I was expecting more explicit material. The amount of Drowners was insane. Also, I found the final battles to be a bit underwhelming.

Though, I'm looking forward to Witcher 2. :)

Spoiler :
yeah the final two battles are pretty easy. Maybe because I did every sidequest I could find, and I was a pretty high level by then. There was only a couple battles in this game that gave me some difficulty. One was the battle near the end of chapter 1 where you are fighting the beast and you are surrounded by a ring of fire. I found no way of doing that battle without a successful Aard sign on the beast. And still no way of keeping Abigail alive- although she doesn't actually die, just go unconcious.

I'd like to have seen them up the difficulty of the final battles, and some of the battles throughout the game.

Witcher 2 is already released in some torrent sites (no crack yet). Sad to see games like that get treatment from freeloaders that do not care what harm they may bring to PC gaming in general. Especially a game made by the developers like Obsidian who happen to care more for the PC gaming community, which is rare these days as it is.

Of course reading some of the comments in one obvious site, there has been a lot of negative feedbacks by people telling others to buy the game for many different reason (this is highly unusual in that site). I personally agree with their sentiments since I am one of those who would rather buy only games that aren't console ports, and only download streamlined titles from big publishing companies that only cater to the console market.

Yeah, torrenting games is bad in general, but torrenting a game by a small studio like CD Projekt, who do a lot of cool stuff for their community, is one step beyond.

I forgot to mention one quirk I found odd in the Witcher. Why does Kalkstein look like an ape from the movie Planet of the Apes? I never understood that. All the other humans look fairly normal except him.

One thing about games being released is I don't like being pressured into buying a game to support the "industry" Especially buying a game just as it came out. Games like Civ5 I would not buy (although I received it as an x-mas present, so I can't do anything about that). Yes I do want TBS games to continue to be made, but they can't shovel out crap like Civ5 and expect me to buy it. A certain standard must be upheld. That said, I would not illegally download a game, I just choose not to buy it if it is crap. A lot of people on the Civ fanatic civ5 general boards urged people to buy civ5 to support TBS games, and I don't agree with that.

I read somewhere that his great-great-grandfather or something was a Gnome, can't remember where though.

It might be those too! But I do remember in game there is mention in your journal somewhere that "Kalkstein might be part gnome" or something to that effect.

Well that just makes him even more cool, plus he was one of the few people who wouldn't threaten to kill me and while he did want to test and possibly dissect me (for SCIENCE! of course) I wasn't worried about that.

That's bloody fantastic and is just one more reason why CDPR is pretty much my favorite game development house in the world right now. You can always count on them to not screw over their customers.

I've bought games after pirating them. ;) Although I generally prefer not to pirate, I'd much rather buy them.

I meant, if they had not pirated them, they would not even have tried them let alone bought them. So basically you're an example of positive effect of pirating. The negative effect is a supposedly huge decrease in sales, which is where my point is; I believe people who pirate games would not have been playing it if they didn't have it for free anyway, ie they would not have bought them or boosted the sales at all.
