The WW2 MOD - Suggestions, Ideas, Discussions...

Have just been playing your mod with the european map. Everything seemed great untill one turn when the hole **** crashed! I played until 670 AD, cant figure out what´s wrong thou. I get this message, the first stuffs in swedish:

I must admit that I have not played much of your MOD, I have been busy lately but there are a few things that I wanted to point out.

- I know the game starts off way in some odd BC but when do you plan to start this MOD? I mean in what year, because when WW2 started with Japan's invasion of China or Germany's invasion of Poland (whichever you prefer) the USSR and USA were not in the war. But if say you started it at the beginning of 1942 when all the big boys were duking it out then France is no longer France, it has been conquered a LONG time ago and granted the resistance was there it doesn't deserve a civ to itself.

- I don't think combining America and UK into the "Western Allies" is a good idea either. First of all I think that does not do them justice as individually powerful nations. But rather because they pursued slightly different agendas, USA was fighting Japan in the Pacific ever since Pearl Harbor while UK was battling the Germans off of their island. Sure they both bombed the crap out of Germany, but America was safe from counter bomb attacks thanks to that wonderful body of water called the Atlantic

- For similar reasons Germany and Italy should not be combined into the "Axis Powers"

- I am intrigued by the two Chinas, I think it is good and you should keep them seperate. They represent the two totally different parties in China that would have went at it had Japan not intervened. Even though they were both fighting the Japanese (Chiang-Ki-Shek in particular) they were often at each other's throats, this could be good.

- The maps are a difficult thing to work with, I would suggest using a world map because that is the only one that captures all the theaters of battle.

And is there any way to force civs to have "grudges", I mean USA will be more likely to go after Japan than say Italy or Germany declaring war on the USSR. Or even to start off some civs with a permanant alliance like France and UK? Just wondering.

I really like this MOD, and will have to play more.

No, I was correct. No Il-1 and no Yak-1. It was I-16i. And it outperformed earlier Bf109s in dogfights. Problem was that soviet planes mostly were destroyed on airfields.

IL2 was initially projected as low-flying attack aircraft. Ilushin was not designer of fighters, his specialization was a bomber: IL-4 (DB-3 - Distant bomber, 1936); IL-10 (low-flying attack aircraft, 1944).
The fighters designers:
Polikarpov: I-15, I-16 (1933); I-15bis (1936); I-153 “Seagull” (1938).
Lavochkin: LAGG-3 (1940); LA-5 (1942); LA-7 (1944).
Yakovlev: Yak-1 (1940); Yak-3 (1943); Yak-7 (1940); Yak-9 (1942).
Mikoyan&Gurevich MiG-1, MiG-3 (1940).
The historical information:
IL2 was called "flying tank" because it has high-power arms and its distinctive feature was an armored shell integrated with a design of a fuselage and defended crew, engine, radiators and fuel tank.
The first prototype was taken aloft on October 12, 1940. The single-seat version of IL2 fast has proved, that it is the highly effective weapon. However losses during 1941-42 were very great because of absence of fighters of tracking. In February 1942 it was decided to produce double version of IL2 (IL2ì) with a gunner in a rear cabin. The mass production of machines was started in September 1942. The new version of IL2 (IL2ì3) was tested in 1942, and first time has appeared in Stalingrad in the beginning of 1943.
Due to significant improvement of flight characteristics and battle qualities IL2ì3 became the most mass version of IL2.
 
You can't forget Soviet "Big Bear" bombers! the biggest pos bomber I have ever heard of, lol. But seriously Im surprised those things could fly.
 
Interesting info. Ilushin themselves stated in documents that they were the producers of the initial fighters used on the Western front when Barbarossa began. They also indicated that the Il2M3 was the predominant mass produced plane (which appears backed up by production numbers I had access to). At this point I'll consider the question moot.
 
I have just played your mod and it is great, but there is couple faults. Some finish citys names are wrong. Vyborg was a Viipuri and Oulu is writen wrong. In the game its Ouly. The Vyborg where the name that the Solviet start to call it and that was the Swedish name of the city, but in finish it is still a Viipuri.

You have but the Finish Prime Minister in the leaders seat. He didnt lead Finland in the war. I suggest that you change it to President Risto Ryti or to Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim. Who did lead the Finlands army force.

Hello I've looked at your save game that you sent in and the problem that you are experiencing is the same as mine. Some and I mena only some of the custom units in the game are buggy although i don't know why, in my case I can't build and british destroyers, adv submarines, or even grenadiers. It will let me start building them but as soon as it completes the game will crash.

In your case it is the Fokewolfe 109 you are building in berlin. I changed the production from this unit to another one flamethrower and the game game continued on normally. One thing though you can't change the production by double clicking on the city you have to right click on the city then choose the change production option.

Again I don't know why it does it if anyone comes up with an answer please let me know. I have played up until ad1410 and have the greatest british empire known to man but its no use as the blasted thing keeps bombing out.:(

Thanks for helping! I was begining to think my post did not show or something. Damn, I have to admit this is most frustrating, not being able to finnish the game. Do you think it´s only the Fokewolfe 109 that causes my crash? maybee I could play the game through with out building that unit...well i guess I'll have to try at least

thís is when not builing any units at all, must be some unit that the AI's building... Anyway here's the save file some turns after the first crash.

I downloaded your save file. You are crashing because you have 3 Balkan Region cities that have NO NAMES for some reason. They are located at 113,73 100,16 and 97,21. Each are trying to produce a unit and crash when the AI finds no name to match with the resources. Did they offer you a name choice when you built them? Or did you create a name of your own? If so, do you remember what the names were? Were they extra long or have unusual characters in them?
 
I stand corrected on the I-16. The picture did it for me. I know it as the TsKB-12 designed by Polikarpov and the 1st operational cantilever monowing fighter with retractable landing gear produced in 1933 and used in the Spanish Civil War. That was the one. But it was considered obsolete by 1937 and couldn't outfly the ME109s in use by Germany in 1941. Ilushin was the prime manufacturer from 1939 to it's replacement, according to what I had researched. Must admit, I am knowledgable on it, but the Soviet airforce is not my expertise [even though sometimes I seem to act like it ;-)]

It was not me that buildt this cities it was the AI, I play gemany. Is it possible that there are to few city names for some civ or just Balkan Region, should'nt that be baltic region, but anyway should not the AI name them something anyway? if so can i change this so the cities will get names in someway and still play this game?

I changed the three city names of the balkan region with the civ3multitools editor and........still crashing! Iguess I give upp on this mod for now untill its abit more secure, but thanks for all the help.

The Balkan Region should have been Baltic, but if you read the early development of this, Grey Fox explained his error and we're going to correct it in a later version. You can go in and change it like I did. I suspected what you asked about the AI being the producer. We have been trying to find out if there is a lower limit on the number of pre-set names in each civilization, but haven't found out yet. I've been working on this lately myself. You might try starting the mod over after putting in some more names. We thought that the AI would reproduce city names with the NEW in front by default, but it may need a minimum number before it works. Still, we found the crash cause and that is good. Interestingly, if you have city names over 19 characters long it crashes intermittently, also. And there is 1 city under Spain that has that. I've changed that in my version and lost my crashes in the 1 test game. Contact me by email if you like for private questions. I'm no expert, but I have found that I do have more info than some.
 
Yep, it concidered to be obsolete but they played the major part in air defence at first monthes of war.
 
hi...do you guys still have any room in your team? I was planning on doing a ww2 mod myself but there's no need for that if you are already doing that. I can do graphics fairly well (i have 3ds max).
 
Hello this is regarding the game crashing at undetermined points in the game. I also had cities that had no name I too changeded these with the result that the game still crashed.

I think I might of found the problem, PLEASE tell me if I am talking rubbish I have tried the following on my PC and it works. Again it is down to the Custom units that are in the game.

In this case the grenadier. I looked at the ini file for the British Comando which does work and compared the two. Below is the two lines which are different in the from the grenadier ini file and the comando one.

British Comando

RUN=..\Marine\MarineRun.flc

Grenadier

RUN=MarineRun.flc

As you can see the grenadier ini file is looking for the MarineRun.flc file in its current directory which will not work. Where as the British Comando ini file is pointing to the correct location. I have updated my grenadier file to correspond to the correct format and everything now works.

One other note there is no Advance Submarine folder in the units zip file so this unit will not work either.

Again please tell me if this is a load of **** but it has worked for me.
 
Oh, Sorry about that.

Anyone that has this problem can copy the commando Ini and rename it to Grenadier.

More units then the German Submarine and the Grenadier that doesn't work?
 
There is a couple more the British Destroyer was one. I've gone through the whole of the units.zip folders and made any relevant changes I've documented them all if you want I'll email you the file with what I've done and the new units.zip file, it saves you doing what I've already done. The one thing I couldn't figure out was the Luftwaffe Focke Wulfe 190 the ini file looks fine but every time you go to build it it bombs the game.
