If someone told me what settings to use for my first game, I would be more likely to use the oposite settings.

The first game is actually probably the worst as you have no clue what you're doing and your strategy is most likely to be sub-par. I think that's the case with most "firsts".

Also, my first Civ4 game my empire quickly went bankrupt because of overexpansion Civ3 style... wasn't really that memorable at all...

I agree with Kid R. I play more for fun than for really getting better at the game. I play almost exclusively on Earth maps at Prince, I don't care much for getting better and playing on randomized maps. I'm looking forward to my first game on Civ 5, probably as the Songhai or Arabia or something, hopefully on Earth if they have a preloaded map. My first game of Civ 4 earlier this year I played as Hatshepsut, trying for a diplo victory...I got to ~1930s before building UN, then someone else got a space victory. Fortunately I reloaded and won diplo...
