Things that still irk me

The entire modern era is an afterthought... no highways/public transport, railroads are lame. At least there's climate change apocalypse and GDRs.
Big praise to the mighty GDR, finally got to use one properly while cleaning Canada cities somewhere in the late 19th century:eek: (big WTH moment for me playing Norway:viking: on archipelago map even on immortal difficulty and not getting iron and Harald still shined somewhat easily) ...I got bored and decided to liberate:ar15: :sniper::rockon:Ottawa as well as Mohenjo-Daro from Canada heymperialist rule (pun intended...i think Ambeorix conquered it an it then flipped:assimilate: to Canada).

Seems like we could easily just up the charges for the military engineer to 100. The downside to this is the AI will just put tunnels everywhere. I swear the AI is obsessed with those things.
The following code would allow MEs to build roads w/o needing a charge:
SQL:
UPDATE Routes_XP2 SET BuildWithUnitChargeCost = 0 WHERE RouteType LIKE 'ROUTE_%_ROAD';

I'll have to give that a try one of these days. I just realized increasing charges would also make things like dams and the sea walls a joke, so that's not a good idea.

Although to be honest the roads don't bother me that much. Because really roads aren't as important as they should be in game I feel. With 1upt a lot of my units end up traveling overland anyways, at least in the first 2 or 3 eras when most of the warfare occurs. I would like to see roads in Civ7 have more importance.

The answer to this is simple

This is a Bethesda situation were you have the foundations of a great game but terrible execution and little or no balance testing or QA

This requires a Bethesda Solution where the modding community does it

Roads are objectively terrible. You don’t control where they go, and there is no realistic option to manually build them

There are several mods that can fix this. Most of them revolve around building roads as a builder/settler whatever action. I find this terrible because the micro of having to move and click each time is absolute torture

This mod has a builder automatically create a road in any tile it enters. Brilliant. It’s simple, clean and intuitive

My main annoyance is still cultists blocking my tiles for dozen of turns on end.

You get a historical event when completing the first railroad between two cities. But it is really only between the cities as the cities themselves dont have the railroad in them.

Still don't understand why tourism gets counted separately from culture but counts for cultural victory.

Managing archeologists is a nuisance. Rock bands OP and annoying.

I despise the rock bands. Almost the worst thing about Gathering Storm.

India got a rock band in one game that was banging out up to 30,000 tourism per concert. It was unstoppable, but of course its success was determined entirely by random chance. Banning the band just sent it to somewhere else to do the same. To prevent India from getting a culture win before I could reach the stars (playing as Germany) I had to wipe it off the map. Which I did. Over an idiotic rock band.

Reminds me of the real world example of the ROK blaring K-Pop across the DMZ and the DPRK threatening retaliation.

I like the rock bands feature, even though I can't really understand the whole mechanic...but I liked your reason to wipe out a civ even more!:D

Well, it wouldn't have been necessary to annihilate a civ in this instance if it was simply an option to arrest a rock band and send it to a gulag.

Meanwhile, same game, I made upward of 10 rock bands, all of which flopped after just 1 or 2 concerts. It's this gross randomness to it that I find annoying, in addition to the idea that a single concert can generate 30,000 tourism. May as well break out the Axis & Allies board game and roll the dice...

Moreover, from a historical viewpoint, it's to me unsound to give rock bands such weight in international affairs, as if they're the final word on cultural advancement and what it takes to immortalize a civilization. A century from now the "rock band" concept could be as antiquated and nearly forgotten as barbershop quartets are today. It reflects a present-day bias that has not yet been vindicated by the test of time.

More like today. Really only a specific point in history even had close to anything resembling a mass cultural "event". Now days musical tastes are so different that I haven't even heard some of the most popular music now days. Or maybe I'm just old. :D I find myself not particularly impressed with Taylor Swift which may be one of the biggest acts around right now. I would say the 60's was the era where rock bands (or musical acts of any genre) held more sway, some of that carried over until the 70's and 80's. Now days with the options we have, most people aren't likely to be fans of "popular bands" and we aren't forced to listen to them with limited radio options we had in the past.

Mountain tunnels: enter one and instantly exit at any other mountain tunnel (is it just on the same continent?).

So I don’t build any of them.

I needed one a game ago in order to get a builder to an aluminum tile that couldn't be reached any other way. Given that aluminum is as rare as iridium in GS I couldn't say no.

Mountain tunnel tiles must be adjacent in order to pop from one to the next in an instant.

There is a useful mod that removes rock bands from the game. I can't stand the sound clip that plays over and over again.

One thing I deplore is denunciation. Civs keep denouncing you because you caused someone grievances - anyone. Even if it is someone they don't like. Furthermore, denouncing the player is like painting a big target on yourself. "Come and declare war on me! You don't have to denounce me first!" The system needs a rework.

My experience says otherwise. Perhaps a research puzzle for both of us, to see which is correct ... or not.

Yeah, the origins of true "Rock and Roll" were made popular in the 50s, which is roughly already 70 years ago.

Jaybe is right on this, they don't need to be adjacent, but they do need to be on the same mountain range (where two mountain hexes are defined as being in the same range if they are connected by other mountain tiles without gaps). So if you have a long mountain range, you can enter any entrance and instantly exit any other exit, which is really horrible design.

Leftover from Civ 5's Brave New World overhaul, which I always found to be amazing.

Though it would actually be fun to split it into Tourism and Culture, where the latter is based off the old way of winning Culture (3,4) and Tourism being current.
