Well i went to load a game just now and it came up saying something along the lines of
"this application has requested runtime to exterminate it in an unusual way"
then windows said that the programme has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Anyone got any idea what thats about?

Sounds like your computer has cockroaches, call an exterminator. Or Verify Integrity of Game Cache under the Local Files tab on the Civilization V Properties in Steam.

Could it be an old save that the patch blew out? I've heard people still having problems with old saves even after the hotfix.

nah this game started before the patch.

Will have a look at the link posted

That's what I'm saying. You started the game before the patch. Now you've patched. Now something about the patch doesn't want to work with your save.

Does it only do this when you load saves that are from before the patch?
Or does it do this when you load saves for games that you started after the patch?

Same thing happened to me after I installed the latest patch yesterday. Strangely enough it didn't affect all my saves.

Im not sure what the steam client is

Hmmmm. There's a few things to try. In Steam, where it has the list of your games, right click on the game, go properties, local files and tell it to verify integrity something something. Also, try updating your drivers and maybe directx.

in the steam client right click on the game, choose properties, choose the updates tab, check the enable steam cloud synchronization box. does this work?

nope went on it and it was already checked :\ this only started to happen when i started games after the patch before the patch everything worked fine :(
Gonna try the other suggestion now.

nope the verify in-whatever its called didnt work also I dont see how updating the direct x etc should have anything to do with it otherwise i wouldnt beable to play and not just be unable to open a saved game.

By any chance could it be mods affecting the loading?

If you are running mods, and you had them installed pre-patch, I guess it could be doing it. I forget where I saw the thread, but I saw some people having trouble with mods after the patch. You could search around on here for the thread. I think the answer was to uninstall the mods and then reinstall them. I'm not exactly sure.

I'd like to add that I'm having the exact same problem...game crashes right when I clicked on load game.

Here's what I've done so far:
-Turned off and turned back on Steam-cloud Sync
-Turned off and turned on Steam Community In-Game
-Verified Integrity of Game-Cache (It said there was 1 file corrupted and was replaced)

My specs:
Nvidia GTS 450 DirectX 11
3GB RAM
WD Black Caviar 640gb HD
Asus A8N32-SLI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.00 GHz
Windows 7 Ultimate N 64-bit

I attached a screen shot of the error. I'll try to see if there are any error logs and/or do windows / DX11 updates.

Btw, I think having "exterminate" in the title of the post is f'ing hilarious!

Ive had this very same problem for weeks, and every game Ive played so far has had it happen. I have tried every single one of the above suggestions and I still get it. Called 2K technical support and they told not to delete the games saves, since they were releasing a "hotfix" soon.
This was last week, since I lost hope and started playing games that do work, so I'm unaware if any patches or updates occurred, but Im going to try tonight
