This expansion won't really change much if the AI still sucks.

I find the extra features that this expansion will bring interesting, but one problem is that unless it also makes it so that the AI can actually be challenging without making it cheat like crazy then it doesn't really matter.

Do you think the expansion will make the AI better?

Yes it does civ 4 AI is olso not perfect I have seem them doing redicoulous things destroy their entire stack because you had some longbowman in a city

at least now diplomacy will matter I hope at least

I actually have pretty high hopes for the AI considering the current lead designer is an AI programmer.

Right. A lot of what makes the AI 'work' is an understanding of how AI will work with a given mechanic. That was Civ3/4's greatest advantage given the AI programmer for both was also the lead designer.

In that context, you can make a game with restrictive mechanics and have an AI that absolutely excels at it but I doubt it would be much fun and or would be missing way too many human centric 'clicky' vanity features.

Comparing the combat AI of Civ4 to the one of Civ5 (present or future) is tricky, because 1UPT is much, much harder to handle than the SoD design. According to the little information in the announcement, there should be improvements, but I think people have very high (and possibly unrealistic) expectations that even a revised combat AI may not be able to meetn easily.

Personally, I'm nevertheless optimistic and believe that even smaller changes could have substantial impact, and anything I have read or seen from and about Ed Beach indicates that he is a man with expertise, experience and vision.

On a side note, with the MP having improved lately, and the expansion or the next patch presumably improving it further, there are alternatives to the AI. Compared to the state MP was in when Civ5 launched, it's actually quite enjoyable now (but this is strictly based on my experience with games on small/tiny/duel maps and a maximum of four players).

i think this is a big driving force behind the naval melee units and embarked units being able to defend themselves, it should be something that the AI can understand and have a chance of using

i hope the developers have a much better understanding of how the AI works now and will tweek the rules to help out the AI, so yes, i think the new Xpac will make the AI better
