three gorges dam wonder and what to do next

I built the 3 gorges dam wonder and here are a few stupid questions

1) does it provide power to all the cities in the same continent or just mine?

2) Do i have to build the power buildings still (hydroelectric...coal, etc) or can i just ignore them? what advantage/disadvantage will this encumber? IE other than health issues do these power building DO anything else other than electricity (add hammers, culture, etc)

1) just your cities (which is all you care about really!)
2) no use building any power building anywhere on this continent, they don't provide anything since YOU ALREADY HAVE POWER

do you have factories everywhere?
if you don't you gained nothing from power

Just yours.

You can only get the effect from one power source, so there is no point in building any other plant if you have Three Gorges. It's like having a hydro plant in every one of your cities on the continent. You do of course have to have a factory for any power plant to give the hammer bonus.

So if you have permanent alliances enabled, your ally wouldn't get the power? I was wondering about that in a game where I was in a race with my ally to build the 3-gorges. I ended up paying gold to get it first.

In a permanent alliance both team members get power from it for all their cities on the same continent...

So what is the deal where you have the dam supplying power but you can still build coal plants and hydro plants? You can also still build a coal plant after building a hydro plant. Is it just a test to see if you are paying attention?

No you can build them as a form of backup - the coal plant will only be active when you loose the power from the dam, i.e. when you loose the city it was build in. Also if you build the coal plant and later the hydro plant the game will choose the one without the health penalty... The thing with the coal plant building after a hydro plant is just useless but building a coal plant and a nuclear plant for example is a good thing in case you loose either your supply of coal or uranium you still have power... I am sure they just weren't bothering with disabling the only redundant build order (hydro plant not from three gorges dam and then disable any other plant)
