Sorry if this has been asked before, the Search function is disabled and wasn't too inclined to continue scanning all Thread titles after I got to page 7.

Anyway, no Throne Room or Palace improvements in Civ 4? If not, why not?

If they're not in the game, that's pretty disappointing. That was one of my favorite features of the 1st 3 games, trying to max out the Throne Room or Palace.

there doesn't appear to be.

Not implemented.

Though I beleive the manual does mention a throneroom. My guess it was one of the things dropped in order to meet the publishers release deadline.

Maybe it will be back in an expansion...

For me it is useless, this doesn't add anything for into the game... So I don't care.

You might not care, but if it were in the game I'm sure the Palace/Throne Room would increase your capital's Culture and make it easier for the city to reach "Legendary Culture" level and contribute to a Cultural Victory.

Since the throne room / palace traditionally celebrated significant improvements to your civilization's culture, that would be rewarding you twice for the same improvements. :thumbdown

In my experience it wasn't merely culture that expanded my Palace, happiness and combat victory played just as much, if not more, of a factor. I recall, in Civ3, if I connected a Luxury resource, like Spices or Dyes or Incense, early on (like before I even established a second settlement) the boost to happiness would earn me a Palace reward. And since I often played as the Romans and a Legionary's victory triggered a Golden Age, that would often grant me a Palace reward or two.

There are plenty of ways in addition to culture that effected Palace building, so it's not a double culture bonus.

Never the less, you got these free improvements from things that had already given you a bonus of some form, and they never rewarded the improvements with increasing the culture of your capital.

It's still doubling up on the bonuses one way or another without further effort on your own behald, and so it should not work that way.

Well, that's a bit disheartening. I enjoyed tinkering with Throne Room/palace quite a bit. Hopefully they'll patch it in sometime.

Thanks for the info guys. :)

I don't see how it would be unfair since all Civs could build their own Palace and get a boost in Culture.

Besides, the Palace is always built in your Civ's capital, which is usually at the centre of your territory, so it's culture boost wouldn't effect other Civs. The only benefit would be, as I mentioned earlier, that your Palace's culture might help your capital reach Legendary Culture status and contribute to a Cultural Victory -- but you'd still need two other great cities to pull that off, and that isn't easy, especially since the number of wonders a city can construct is limited. Most of my original cities have every city improvement I can build and my city's highest Culture rating is my capital, Rome, at ~32,000 -- in 2002 C.E. when I won a Domination Victory. I can't imagine what I'd have to do to reach 50,000. Maybe have 5 Great Artists build Great Works? But in that campaign I think I only ever produced 2 GAs. I mostly produced Great Engineers, which is what I preferred anyway.

So I think adding the Palace back into the game would definitely help Cultural Victories.

I always thought the Palace improvement screen was a redundant feature - a minor irritant actually - and I don't miss it at all.

If it actually added to the gameplay, extra culture points or something, I might feel otherwise.

It's not so much unfair as it is stupid.

The palace improvement has always been a "congratulations - you've reached a milestone in your civilization" system in previous Civs.

What you are suggesting is an "achievement = bonus = more achievement without effort" reward that is entirely unnecessary to provide.

Should they have had palace improvements with cultural bonus effects on offer when certain milestones were achieved, but that would cost you a certain amount of resources to implement to your palace if you chose to accept - that would then be more sensible. But if the improvements cost you nothing then they should give you nothing in return.
