Tiny Island map mode (and possibly others) make game crash on start up

When I picked Tiny Islands from the map types during advance set up, the game would crash when I started. But picking everything else the same, but something basic like Continents, the game started up fine.

I just started a game with Tiny Islands, Standard map size, 8 Civs and 16 CSs. The game didn't crash on startup and I played a few more turns, again without crashing. Try again with a smaller map size and fewer Civs and CSs. If you still crash, please post your DxDiag file. Thanks!

Well, here is my entire setup:

Map type: Tiny Islands
Map size: Huge
Age: 3 billion years old
Pace: Marathon
All others should be default, except switching on Raging Barbarians.

Changing the map type was the only thing that ensured a none crash from me.

Sorry if I seem to be dense, but did you try changing the parameters suggested in my first post? If you did try those other options and still crash, please attach your DxDiag file. See my sig for instructions on how to create one. Thanks.

A few things:

A. I have attached my DxDiag (but you probably won't find that to be the issue).

B. In the guide you link to, it says 'Ctrl+R', when it is actually 'Super (or Windows key)+R'.

C. Regardless still, it shouldn't crash if I pick a huge map size. However, yes, picking Standard with Tiny Islands does not crash.

Thanks. I'll ask The_J to correct the DxDiag instructions.

I started a game with Tiny Islands, Huge, 12 Civs and 24 CSs. The started and I played 25 turns without any problems. My system specs are worse than yours: Win XP SP3, 2GB system RAM, 512MB RAM on the video card. I can only run DX9, not DX11. Can you try forcing DX9 and then start a game with Tiny Islands on a huge map? I'm not suggesting this as a workaround, but to see if DX11 is the problem. If so, we can report it as such.

You are correct. Using Dx9 'fixes' the issue. It no longer crashes.

You probably should update your video drivers. It might solve your problem. If you update and the Tiny Islands map still crashes, then our report would be more solid. Thanks.

Having upgraded my video driver, the issue persists. For sake of clarification, I have attached my newest DxDiag file.

Can someone else with access to DirectX 10/11 please attempt this?

Weird. Now I cannot create it under DirectX9 either. o_O What's going on???

Edit: Okay, this is going to sound silly. So, despite my presumptions, I did the silly thing of turning down my resolution (1920x1080) to something 'reasonable' (1280x960), and strangely, it worked.

This was under DirectX9. I then attempted to retry the same procedure under DirectX11, but no such luck. However, it should be noted that Civ5 has two different default video settings for each version of DirectX.

Format: Leader Scene, Overlay, Shadow, Fog of War, Terrain Detail, Terrain Tessellation, Terrain Shadow, Water, Texture, Anti-Aliasing.
DirectX 9: Low, Medium, Medium, Low, Medium, Medium, Low, Low, High, Off.
DirectX 11: High, High, High, High, High, High, High, High, High, 4X MSAA.

As for your question whether I could load the old save: The answer is yes. No problem. I want to note that the loading progress crashes at the same point each time. If I choose England, it will crash as the narrator gets to 'England is an ancient land'.
