im sort of a noob at this game and need help keeping up with the AI on this difficulty
tips for Emperor difficulty

Keeping up in what way? If you are a "noob", perhaps Emperor is too far a stretch. What was your experience on lower difficulty levels?
Assuming you have won at King level, chances are your trying to build too many world wonders and failing.
Emperor is a really tiny step unless you've been relying upon world wonders. It's the next step up to Immortal that's huge (and the last step that is a chasm)
Emperor is basically King + one more free starting tech (so a few more wonders will go quicker) + every AI gets a free starting Scout.
It's Immortal that give the AI a free worker & Deity that gives the AI a free settler.
