I recently started playing this mod and I enjoy the additional challenges it brings to the table. I usually play regular BTS well at Noble to Prince difficulty, so this mod's a bit of a step up. I'll admit that bigger set of tools to work with is a bit daunting and I don't really know what to do compared to regular BTS.

Does anyone here experienced playing this mod have any good general tips and strategies for this specific mod? And also, which leaders are the best for new players? I've tried Sejong of Korea and found that his Humane trait does wonders for managing Dissent.

Welcome! Here's a few key things to get you started.

  • Humane leaders are definitely a good choice for someone starting out. I'd recommend Gandhi (Philosophical), Askiya (Organised), and Salamasina (Expansive). The longer Golden Ages of Philosophical are very effective, and the Organised and Expansive are great for getting your economy up and running quickly.

  • In BTS, improvements such as Camps and Plantations could only be built atop a resource. This is not true in HR and many such improvements actually have a chance to discover resources in regular terrain. I recommend exploring the Improvements section of the Pedia, to get familiar with which Improvements can be built where.

  • Mines, Workshops, and Villages/Towns all cause unhealthiness in their city, so be sure that have sufficient health before building them. The Subsistence civic is overpowered at the moment, so build Forest Camps wherever you can, they're a great source of non-polluting production.

  • Designate one city for each type of Great Person you wish to generate and choose the appropriate buildings/wonders and specialists for them. GPP is generated separately for each type of Great Person in HR, so you don't have to worry about getting the wrong one.

  • Don't worry too much about trying to found and develop a religion on your first few games, especially if there are Spiritual leaders in play. Sharing tenets with another civ gives you a diplomatic bonus, so adopt the state religion and tenets of whoever you wish to keep on good terms with. You may want to reform out of an unsuitable Worship tenet though.

  • Golden Ages are vital for managing dissent. They can lower it considerably, so they're most effectively started when you have already have a number of high dissent cities.

  • If you have one city with excessively high dissent, it's often best to just let it secede. Civil wars lower the dissent of all non-seceding cities to Stable, so it's much better to lose one or two cities temporarily than struggle to prevent it and eventually lose a whole province.

Hope you enjoy the mod :)
