I enjoy starting in the classical era but I'm still new to the game having won 20 victories (mostly dom) between prince and immortal, so I don't know yet all of the obvious and the not so obvious strategies
an important one is agoge+magnus (settler promotion) and start chopping settlers fast, even harvesting just 2 food resources can get you a 4 pop city very early, as early pop is much more relevant than later
