To Sloop or to Frigate?

Been having fun playing Pirates and have just discovered this forum. Lots of good advice and tips here. Love the MODs too! Would like to see more done with the wedding- a total social extravaganza, run into pirates, and other govs. and their daughters (controlled by the peace treaties, of course)...

I appreciate the sailing and battle characteristics of the Sloops. Believe me it scared the pants off me when I ran into Blackbeard east of the Florida Keys. My sloop was almost fully upgraded- almost, hmmm. Well, I kept away from his broadside best I could, sailing behind or ahead, turning and fireing: like an ant knawing away, a little at a time. I hurt him badly, but he was closing in. My crew numbers were down but the sloop was in better shape than the Frigate. He had almost twice the crew though. As he got in close to board, I let loose and took down his entire rigging. When he boarded, I couldn't believe it. He surrendered the ship, No 1 was taken out... a really good day to have a sloop, lol.

Nevertheless, I've found that the 90 ton Frigate is the best all around vessel to have. If ya can't hit a Sloop, royal or otherwise, with a 40 gun ship- suptin's wrong! Sure the wind can hurt in some instances, but just line up that first broadside and it's toothpicks for the sloop, whether you're going for the hull or for the sails. Personally, I like 'em to get up real close- boom, dead in the water @ about 0 to 1 knots.

The Ship of the Line will appear from time to time. It has advantages and a downside too. With the SO'L closing speeds can be 18 to 24 knots in the right wind. You have a crew of up to 450. The armament is 48 guns- not too shabby. However, crew numbers seems to make the difference for me, as to whether or not I keep the SO'L.

Unless I am in a sack-the-city mode, I like to have 100 to 120 crew members, because I can keep them happy. yes, they grumble but they work and stay on. It's too lean for land war, unless I find a city with 60 soldiers; but, for sea action the lean crew cannot load 48 guns fast enough to be viable in battle and stay the action.

So, faced with a choice about which ship to keep, with a crew of 102, I kept the smaller of the two. With the 90 ton Frigate, I could operate in battle conditions with 78 men at 100% speed; the load and ready to fire time for the SO'L crew allotment of 24 crew members, on the otherhand, was too little and too slow. It put me at a disadvantage in battle. Time to get 1800 in gold- so SOLD!

As for the sword fighting, I always take the opposing ship's crew down to (1) if the ship doesn't raise her colors, especially in the case of the two evil villians, lol. The size of the crew is everything in determining the outcome of the duel with these two characters, or so it seems.

try the War Canoe

A Ferarri beats a Desoto any time . . .

once you learn how to drive it, the war canoe is the fastest most maneverable thing on the high seas. And nothing can stand up to it.

and how many would you need to sack a modestly gaurded city? I'll stick with my War galleon (or SOL if i can get one)

a canoe can drag along a fluyt full of cargo crewmen
to sack a town if you wish.

when you suggest I use a fluyt to help sack cities is where I leave and go play video games.

I prefer a Brig of War: it carries enough guns to argue with a 90 ton Frigate, but is faster and more manouverable than it's larger square-masted friends. It carries a reasonable amount of cargo, and a respectable number of men. The only problem with the Brig of War is that it simply lacks the protection of the larger warships; a careless moment against a Flag Galleon or Heavy Frigate can spell disaster.

I have an older version of the game, and far less types of vessels.
I like the Barque pretty much.

This seems to be a popular question. I'm partial to a Large Frigate with a Royal Sloop as a back-up , in case I want to capture a pinace or canoe instead of blowing them out of the water or risk letting them run away.

Next game I'll go Ship of the Line.

I prefer the Sloop. It works best with my play style, which relies on speed and maneuverability . That way I can outmaneuver my enemies and fight on my terms. Usually some chain shots first to take down the sails, then just circle like a shark.

Royal sloop for the win! Am i right in thinking that is the fastest ship in the game? 100 men and 20 guns is more than enough for me.

Daftpanzer,

The Royal Sloop really did work for me once against Black Beard. Fastest in battle? Can't really say. Maybe the most maneuverable! The Brig of War and the Large Frigate have the firepower. The former is as good in maneuvering in battle as the R.Sloop, but it also has the guns...

The Royal sloop victory over Black Beard's 90 ton Frigate was a sloop-fluke, just a real surprise. Don't think it would happen again, or thinking that it wouldn't be likely for it to repeat often, to happen with frequency.

However, I do keep a R.S. in my fleet and bring it to battle from time to time.

um

war canoe

As a general rule, I'd agee.

I'm pretty sure that the war canoe is the most maneuverable ship in the
game and the fastest directly against the wind. I'm not sure how they compare for speed with mail runners in various winds.

I believe the ship of the line is the fastest under ideal winds.

A tricked out Royal Sloop is a pirate hunter for a reason . They are dangerous to any ship. Particularly dangerous in pairs.

A RS can dart into chain shot range off of a ship's rear quarter, where the ship not only can't return fire, but suffers extra damage from having the deck raked diagonally. Once enough sail or crew damage has been done it can circle behind the enemy's stern as it reloads.

Que rupertlittlebee to explain how the war canoe is more dangerous in human hands because it can outmaneuver everything else, and while it can't take much damage, it doesn't have to because it can dodge volleys instead.
It requires more broadsides to do the job, but it moves into position quicker.

Brig of War all the way. It provides the power of the frigate with a much better maneuverability. I have seen a disadvantage in sloops in that there is a one hit KO that sometimes happen if it gets raked, not even a heavy rake is needed. This has occurred about 6 times for me fighting them and once for my brother using a sloop. His took about a 6 cannonball raking and sayonara.

But on a side note, if one chooses the maneuvariblity, would it not be better to get the mailrunner. I mean, I love a 25 broadside victory but seriously, wouldnt 5-10 be better.

I'm not very good at manuvering, so I like a frigate with a lot of crew, and just try and board. I'd rather take the ship intact by boarding than destroy half of it with guns.
