I needed it because my oil was underwater.

I'm still not quite sure what to make of the global warming mechanics. Some of it makes me long for those Civ 3 days of just killing things.

chopping trees for some stuff in the ancient and classical era might be ok but to use wood in order to create a plane or finishing a space part really seems funny

I would have just made/bought a engineer to finish a flood barrier. Engineers are useful most of the game because of railroads. They can finishing aqueduct, dams, mountain passes and flood barrier. Chopping down a forest that late int eh game is a lose in production then again you do not need that much production by the time you can make flood barriers.

Well, the problem was that this was halfway across the world (since the resource gods hated me and left me very few on my own continent). So, I didn't have the Encampment for the engineer, and to make it on the mainland and then swim it there would take 14 turns, too long before the waters would rise.

This was exactly what I was thinking!

So, would anyone be opposed to not allowing chopping for Flood Barriers? That does seem reasonable.

Good job! In Science victory most of my projects are from chopping, Holy Spaceport plus wooden spaceship brings you to Mars and exoplanets.

You could have just build an oil rig... ;)

Like tech Osen says, when an oil tile submerges you can still use an offshore platform to get at the black stuff.
You can also put seasteads and such on them once they are submerged and become true water tiles. Mined strategics are lost to the sea, though. IIRC they even count as valid water for the golden gate!
