Ok I tried my first terra map game. And i've just discovered "the new world", and I have enabled raging barbarians, so im hoping that it would be infested with barbs and barb cities sinse its been under the fog of war for so long. But all there was, was two small barbarian cities! So, what gives? I want more barbs and barbs cities!

Sounds like a freak occurance. Even without raging barbs, the new world is usually absolutely swarming with them. Usually they have size 15 cities with culture, and huge stacks of 20+ macemen. With raging barbs, It's normally completely insane. I suppose for this game you could add a bunch with world builder, but it's not really a great solution. What difficulty are you playing? I suppose on settler there won't be many barbs.

Im playing on prince. And im hoping its a freak event! In my next terra game it better be more of them when my explorers set foot on the undiscovered new world.

Map size small. Is that why?

Terra maps are set up like this.

Two continents, an old world where all civs start and a new world about 60% the size of the new world. The smaller the map the smaller the new world. The smaller the new world the less chance that a barb city will spawn. And from my experience barb cities do not spawn the same way AI cities spawn. They tend to spawn in good places but rarely do barbs try to maximize the land by building cities near each other.

In other words on small maps there aren't going to be many cities. It might not have been a freak occurance. Next time try standard map and maybe low sea levels to maximize the land.

Can you do any tampering with any files to make barbarian cities spawn more often then?

Diffculty level increase the amount barb cities by reducing the number land squares requir for a barbcity to appear. But I don't know off hand which file diffculty level can be changed.
unowned tiles per barb city is 160 (settler),150,140,130,120,110,100,90,80 (deity)
( I got this off of a chart)

Edited: I found it in the "Civ4HandicapInfo". Just lower the "iUnownedTidesPerBarbarianCity = #" number under the difficulty level you want to play.

Not to hijack the thread but i have seen pictures of sid meir as a leader and was told he was the barbarian leader. Are you ever able to talk to barbarians? I have met a city of barbarians which was quite advanced and i was not going to attack it but since i could not communicate i had to eventually.

Is this just a freak thing with the sid leaderhead? Anyone know about it?

You cant communicate or do any form of diplomacy with barbarians. And you are at constant war with them. The sid meier picture i think was from a mod that added a civ called Barbarians with Sid Meier as their leader, and it used the picture of Sid from the toturial.

talking to the barbs would just make them another civ.

Actually all the modder did was enable the barbs to be a playable faction, fireaxis set that one up by themselves, presuming a modder would eventually do that. When edited to be playable, the barbs function like any other civ, except they don't get any civ traits (Now there is a challenge for someone). Also there are two types of barbs, the minors (wich is what I'm refering to here) and the barbs. The barbs proper can't build cities, and from my understanding can't really be modded into the game, only the minors can.

I love to play Earth, Noble, Epic & standard map, mostly as England or Rome, or another Old World Civ for variety.

The New World is ALWAYS mental with Barbs when I finally get there, usually around 1200 AD. Cities all over, stacks of Longbowmen, workers with a lot of mines and roads, and if the Americans are still going they have 2 or 3 stunted cities at most.

Surprised to hear your trouble - I must've played a 100 Earth games, never seen as few Barbs as you!

Last time I played terra, I reached the new world around 1200AD and spent the better part of the next 200 years clinging to 2 cities on islands off the coast fighting off the boatloads of barb troops heading my way. finally I built enough boats and troops to invade the mainland and start taking cities. The barbs easily had more military power than 2/3 of the civs in the old world.

See thats was what i hopet would've happened! In my next game im going to try a standard size terra map and see if i can get some more barbarian action! (riiiight, you know what i mean..)...
I'll post and let you know, if i remember.
