TOS - Land of the Blind

I think I will have to give serious consideration to removing airlift
capabilty for paratroopers in version 4. Being able to rush so many troops
to isolated islands is just not historical. The airlift capacity to get them there
and keep them from starving was not available in 1942. No one has ever
thought to use them like that in any of the other 2 test games. They would
still be able to do airdrops, of course.

BTW, have you been keeping population records of the Japanese home
islands?

I knew you would say that. ;) To be honest, I was reluctant to reinforce the
islands that way, knowing that the use of that many paratroopers is
unhistorical and unmeant in the scenario. BTW, the whole point would be
moot if you could only airlift one paratrooper TO any airbase/airport, and not
only one unit FROM any airport/airbase. Perhaps another game rule? You
could increase their price or weaken their defense value, too. Or maybe a
hitpoint penalty?

Keep in mind that I could only produce vast amounts of paratroopers because
there was no need for more Marines/Infantry/Tanks/... after I defeated China.
One more human player, and the pressure to build other stuff would have
prevented the build-up of that large paratrooper force. In general, my
strategy to build factories and not mobilizing until turn 10 wouldn't have
worked against two ore more human enemies.

Well, after turn 1 I haven't seen another disease notification. Maybe I can't
see them anymore because of the black screen at the start of my turn? I
stopped drafting after a couple of turns, and used my workers to maximize
production at the expense of agriculture. As a result, the Japanese population
is downright constant since turn 10 or so. Next time I will note down city sizes.
 
My Submarines sank a DD Escort northwest of Pearl Harbor, a DD next to Hilo
and a Transport east of Tarawa. I lost an Advanced Submarine to one of
yours southeast of Pearl Harbor.

Major offensive on Tarawa! All planes and ships in the area bombarded the
c**p out of the American positions and redlined every defender on the island
(except the two Flaks). One ASW Aircraft was lost to AA fire. Then our brave
Paratroopers climed out of their foxholes and attacked the traumatized US
troops. The defending MG Battalion mowed down the first wave of
Paratroopers (I foolishly decided to send in the elites first), but fell to the
second attack. One Flak and three Marines died subsequently, but then the
second Flak and a GI won their battles. The carnage ended with the killing of
one GI.
In total, you lost three Marines and one Flak, MG Battalion and GI; I lost
three Paratroopers. One American Flak and GI are left on the island.

The city sizes of the Japanese islands are: Tokyo: 11, Nagasaki and Osaka: 9
Akita: 8, Sapporo: 12 (I didn't bother to draft), Toyohara: 7, Formosa: 8,
Okinawa: 7, Komi: 6.
 
Played and sent.

After a short naval bombardment, the last pocket of resistance on Tarawa was
cleared without losses. A worker has completed a fourth airbase on one of the
islands between Kwajalein and Tarawa.

My Submarines sank a DD Escort and a damaged Transport south of Hilo.
Another Submarine spotted a small convoy (DD Escort, 2 Transports) northeast
of Hilo. After some serious contemplation, I decided to sink the Escort and let
the Transports escape to Hilo. A Submarine that close to the American continent
is far more worth than a full Transport. I was rewarded with the awesome
sinking animation of the DD Escort.

to build Paras instead of ships and airplanes during the crucial first turns...

Ah, but there's the problem, no need to postpone, USA goes straight
for Amph. Warfare, CW goes for Sub warfare, they both send a little
money to the Dutch who do the airborne. In 6 or 7 turns Allies have all
3! Japan up the creek with no paddle!!!
 
I found no ships near Hawaii; the American fleet probably stays in port and
prepares for a major sortie.

Darwin conquered, one elite infantry lost.

Right now I have 54500 VP, so I only need 5500 more to win. The Allies have
14004 VP.
 
The war drags on into the new year...

Midway conquered. Somehow, you must have overlooked that convoy
between Tokyo and Midway. The load of two Assault Transports, escorted by
a BB, two Carriers, DDs and Subs, poured out and took the island without
losses. A MG Battallion and three airplanes were destroyed.

To my surprise, this did not push me over the 60 000 VP limit. I lost two subs
around Hilo (another convoy spotted), and there was no fighting with the
CW, so there remains one more turn to be played... or not, if you don't want
to, eric_A.

I almost fulfilled my own victory condition: to win this scenario with all VP
location in Japanese hands. The only Allied VP location left is Pearl Harbor,
and I'm not sure if 8 Marines could have taken the city - or would have even
reached it.

I had a lot of fun, eric_A! :) I'm glad that this was a fast paced PBEM,
because it would have been torture to wait several days for the next save.
During the first turns, you taught me the hard way that large convois are the
only way to go in this scenario. This tactic was new to me, as it is not
necessary against the AI and none of my MP LAN games ever made it into the
(late) industrial age. I'll post some questions and more suggestions later.

I was wondering why you never exploited the victory of the SS Bluefin, after I
had assembled my carriers. I lost almost all escorts to that sub, and I couldn't
keep my carriers at sea any longer because they would have been vulnerable
to your subs. At that time, there was almost nothing left between Pearl
Harbor and Tokyo.

What's happening in PH and Hilo? I lost a lot of subs during the last turns, so I
assume there was a huge convoy inside the ports. During the last turns, I had
the feeling you were trying to trap my subs by offering them some cheap
targets (PT Boat, empty transports).

When my I-boat spotted that convoy east of Hilo, did those carriers really
have airplanes on board? Why didn't you just rebase the planes to Hilo? I
assume you knew that Kido Butai had retreated to the west and was no
threat to that convoy.

Sorry for all those questions, but I'm playing in LouLong's Kamikaze contest
and I want to learn as much as possible from this PBEM.

At the time of the Bluefin attack, I was running my second convoy
(with our first marine unit) from the west coast to Hilo. Most of my fleet
was around Hilo waiting for the arrival of the convoy to escort it from Hilo
to Kwajalein. The Enterprise was in the Coral Sea with only 2 destroyers left
as escorts. It would have taken a long time to get to Tokyo.

At the end I had 1 light carrier left and a few subs, DDs and DEs. We
were just running some small convoys in to reinforce Hawaii and doing
sub hunting using our subs or DEs to spot, and then calling in planes.
There were a lot of troops on the Hilo Island that could not be shipped
any further.

Some of The carriers you spotted were loaded, I could not be sure
you sent all your ships back to the west. When Ispotted that destroyer
I thought it might be scouting for one of your carriers.

Go luck with the Kamikaze contest.
