Whenever I play the modern era and I see those numerous citizens, one word comes into mind... tourism. and revenue

Well with rail roads perhaps different countries can earn more money by letting tourists come or something like that...

What do u ppl think? :)

There isn't much point as counting as an extra feature as roads and rails etc all give a commerce bonus anyway, which tourism could be included in.

great idea!i can already imagine....here is the altar where montuzuma slaughtered several warriors and virgins!
look elizabeths milk bath!check out the bauty of catherina!
look the poor drunk in a poker game abe lincoln!
nice idea

Also the culture function includes tourist attractions as they are wonders and they gain more culture points over time...

yes yes yes today i heard many many ideas but......
damn firaxis is so lazy they wont do any of those concepts:(

And if a civ has crazy wide open borders like the U.S. some of those tourists (or immigrants) could be terrorists. Oops. There's goes my nuclear power plant. Oops. we just lost Wall Street!

Tourism isn't that bad an idea.

How i think it should be done is like this. When a wonder expires, it then rakes in 5 gold per turn.

So a new unit should be created.

1.- tourist unit attack 0 def 0 cost 20 shield
2.- when this tourist is into another cultural border he must pay gold per turn proportional to total cultur point.
3.- This tourist can be capture as a hostage, torture, interogate, hold in jail for month without beiing accuse of anything
4.- Why? he look like a taliban !!!

So, the tourist would be a unit that must pay and wich can be captured by the foreign spies. Very interesting. Just one question: why should I bother in creating that unit?

Frodo, its a joke.

ya it was a joke because recently a Pakistan medic was hold in u.s. jail for seven month whitout beeing accuse of anything, he was release because he was naturalized canadian and our embassi did some pressure. Poor him, a medic hold in a little jail for 7 month just because he look like a taliban.

As long as we are considering the effects of tourism:

1. Food prices go up when tourists demand fresh fish/produce etc.
2. In poorer countries, tourist infrastructure is foreign invested and drives up the local price of building material.
3. Tourism can spread the tourists culture and undermine the local culture.

If I were a firaxis developer I would include tourism under the mobilization scheme. Your country could mobilize for tourism and then only be able to build culture bearing improvements, ports, airports, trade structure. Culture output would triple or quadruple, making a cultural victory a remote possibility for a weaker nation. No more defense, but other civs would be more likely to take your side if you were attacked. Less food but more gold from big cities. It would be a "last resort" adopted by smaller countries (like Tahiti) who are in danger of being wiped out of the game.

There should be a bit more of a payoff for having a high culture! Those hanging gardens lose their value in the middle of the game, perhaps viewing it as a cultural link to the past...

<shrugs>

I think it's a neat little twist!
