trade routes? what?

so i dont quite understand trade routes

if i run a road between my 2 cities apparently this is good?
i own both cities so what benefits do i get from it?

how does it all work? what does it do?

Pre-Brave New World:

Trade routes are when you connect a city to your capital by roads/harbors. You generate gold according based on the population of your capital and the city you have a connection to. The equation is

(capital population * .15)+(other city population * 1.1)-1

Add in the maintenance cost for roads, and you'll see how trade routes aren't profitable until you the city you have a connection to grows in population.



In Brave New World:

The old Trade Routes was renamed City Connections. The new Trade Route system replaced it.

i get gold on top of what they are producing from the cities already?

so if city 1 is generating 5g per turn and city 2 is 3g per turn and i have a trade route, i get more on top of that 8g ?

Yes, that's the idea. Research The Wheel and connect one of your secondary cities to the capital with a road (or harbor). And, the gold yield for road/harbor connections is independent of the level of gold generation in the two cities. The larger the populations of your capital and the connected city, the greater the gold yield from the connection.

In BNW, "trade routes" (with caravans and cargo ships) is an additional source of gold (but different computation from road/harbor city connections).

BNW: The new trade routes only provide gold for external trade. (Those outside your empire.)

While you can have an internal trade route, that is hammers or food. City connection (which does not use up any trade connection slots) is the internal source of gold .

The city connection gold for connection of a city with the capital is income on top of the cities.
