Okay I know this probaly will sound crazy, but I think that it is benefical sometimes to trade away captured cities for things you need.

This was my situation. I had a mutual protection pact with the, Irquiois, my friendly neighbors to the north. The Eqyptians had been hostile to me throughout the game, as well to the Irquious. All of sudden the Egyptians invaded the Irquious. I mobilized my forces, and took three cities. I then traded the three cities for 330 gold and 10 gold per turn. Why you ask?

1.) I don't have to worry about resistors.
2.) The cities won't be very productive.
3.) The Irquious were a very small civilization, and I could easily crush them. So they aren't much of a threat.
4.) I now have a buffer state between me and the Eqyptians, so I can declare war at my own chosing.
5.) I don't have to worry about a sneak attack anymore!
6.) The AI will usually give you pretty much anything for cities. The only reason I stopped at 330 is because that was all they had in their coffers. If you need something like a resource this is a good way to get it.

Of course, if your looking to rule the world this strategy is not for you.:)
