Is it not possible to have a game with AIs and a friend over LAN, and try to have a normal and fair relationship with your buddy, where you do trades seriously instead of just giving each other everything as constant allies?

I don't get the option to trade with my friend, only chat or declare war. I play Civ 4 v. 1.61, I believe it is. A LAN game.
Can I turn this feature On, if it is off by default? I want to trade with him just as with other AIs. Firaxis is known to give many options in how you play your game, and I cannot understand if they completely removed this feature.

Thank you, hope for quick reply :)

In Hotseat games my friends and I can trade technology, money and resources as a we like, condition upon having the appropriate tech. I just click on my friends' civ names the lower right and a diplomacy screen (without a leaderhead image) opens. Then I propose something, exit the screen, and finish my turn. When one of my friends takes his turn the dip screen pops up for him automatically because I started a communique, and he then decides what he'll do. In hotseat games we often leave the room to give each other space. If we are team-mates in a game, we might stick around and coach each other.

I bet a LAN game, depending upon set-up, should allow the same thing.

Does that help? :)

I have the Warlord's expansion and haven't encountered any problems with trading over LAN connection. The only difference to me seems to be that you don't see your opponent's leaderhead.

Have your civilizations met in the game?

First of all, I'm very happy to hear at least it should be working! :)
Can ships and land units meet each others? Because I had a warrior right next to his ship, and that was how I got to meet the AI too, without any land units being on ground, if I recall correctly. Maybe different criterias for humans?

And what techs do both of us need to meet, and then later to trade etc?

I think you also need a road/river/coast network connecting you to your friend. And after you've researched Alphabet.
