When I try to trade with other computer leaders they sometimes ask if I will trade say wine for cows. The problem is that I do not know how many cows I have. If I have 2 then good trade, but if I have only one cow, then not so good a trade.
Any way to check how many cows I have without leaving the trade screen?

You can hit the 'care to negotitate?' option, then remove the cows. You'll then see 'cows(2)' or something to that effect in the list of available trade items. I've worried about that also, but so far I've yet to see the AI make a suggestion that involved my last resource. I've made a few myself, but I haven't seen the AI make the suggestion.

I may be wrong but for resource trading doesn't it only show excess resources for trading as one of your current resources is being used? So if you have 1 clam, 2 cows and 3 corn going to your cities it will show as 1 cow and 2 corn in the trade window.

I haven't got the game with me to test so please correct me on this if I'm off the mark.

From what I know, if the AI approaches you for trade, it will do so only if you have spare resources.

However, if you know that you're going to get that resource (maybe it's in your territory but not hooked up yet) and they offer it to you, you might want to reject the deal, otherwise you have to cancel it sometime in the future, that may anger them.

I'm pretty sure if it says Horses(1) for example it means you only have 1 source. If you trade it you have lost it.

I know this because I tried it last night, I know I only had one horse resource and it showed as (1)

In my experience the AI never asks for resource where you have only one. It seems to "know" that you won't trade it (imagine it being red on your screen". You, of course, are able to trade anything even if you have only one but it appears you must initiate that. I think they did this to avoid you having to check but I don't think they say it in the manual.

Contrary to Civ3, the numbers behind the resources in the trade screen now show the total number of these resources you have, not the number of spare resources, as it ws in Civ3.

I don't know whether the AI will never ask for resources of which you have only one ... so far I've used the "negotiate / remove from table"-technique to find out whether I could spare it.

The problem with this is that sometimes the AI is no longer willing to trade with you if you dont accept their initial offer, even if your subsequent offer is the same as their proposed offer. Better to accept the offer and assume that they're not asking for your only one. I've never observed the AI asking for my only anything.
