Okay, I almost always refuse to teach technologies to other civilizations (unless they are far superior to me militarilly) but I do always trade technologies.. because while they may be getting new technology, I'll be getting new technology as well.. but I am now beginning to wonder if this isn't really a good idea. I just played a game where I was the #1 civilization.. I was way ahead of the other civilizations.. I had built every single wonder available to me and none of the other civilizations had built a single wonder.. it was great. Then I went exploring, traded technology with China, and suddenly China is advancing ahead of me. But it isn't only China.. it's everybody. I'm 3rd in technological advancement now.. but sometimes I jump into 2nd and back into 3rd again. China got Nukes before I even had Conscription.. But I used to be way ahead of EVERYBODY, but now I'm just at the top of the pack with the exception of China who has got a spaceship now.. Is trading technologies really this dangerous, or could it just be something else which slows me down in the middle of the second age..?

Well basically you have to pay attention which tech you trade with them. It's ok if you give them "code of laws" or "recycling" so there should be no problem in trading civilian techs but under no circumstances give them military hardware. Because if you give a civ which is clearly behind in tech race the tech which allow them to produce Tanks you can be in great danger.

So I always stick to the rule: civilian: yes
military: NO

Of course you can give them things which are outdated but this will happen to you very seldom the AI is clever enough to demand the newest things at least most of the time.

I usually try to pay attantion to that as well.. but the way I just dropped like a rock in the tech race really suprised me. And I had researched mainly civ type of stuff.. like writing and alphabet and math.. that sort of stuff.. so when I traded I got caught up militarilly and a few civs caught up as far as civilian techs go, but then the whole world just shot right past me almost..

My rule of thumb is that if two different civs gain something which is equally beneficient to both of them, and one of those civs is my civ, then I gain more. What do I mean? Well, I'm far smarter than the AI (if I weren't... :crazyeye: !!!), and thus can take much more advantage of what I have.

So I always trade technology, as long as, just as Overlord pointed out, I'm not giving away useful military tech. Overlord's rule is especially important in Civ1, because there are so few units in the game really, that getting tech for new attackers like Chariots, Knights and especially Armor, gives alot of power. Also don't give away Conscription if you want to conquer that civ, it's a revolution for the defense.

If you're trading with a weak civ, don't hesitate to give 2 techs for one. What's most important, always, is that you gain something useful. The only civs you want to deny tech, land or money to, are the strongest ones.

Well, the thing that sucks about trading technology though, is that while I get to pik which of their techs I want, the computer also gets to pick which of mine it will take, and I don't know which one it will take until I agree. (When trading technology.. not when one just asks for some.)

I never trade technology for the gold.
Only for millitary alliance, may be, but not militaristic tech.
I will fight enemy alone, than sign alliance with giving Chivalry or Military Tradition or tanks tech to rival.
Even rival is gracious toward me. (this gracious will be not forever)

Hmm, sunround, I think you're on the wrong forum. Military Tradition tech, alliances, trading for gold, and 'gracious' disposition are all features of Civilization *III*, not Civ1. We're talking about Civ1 here :)

I don't think I ever traded techs in Civ1... much less traded at all. ;)

I never trade techs.
I depend on myself tech-wise. My civ is usually far ahead of the others so they don't have anything to offer for me.
At higher levels this may be different but there I have another strategy: kill em all as fast as possible. :D

ditto. Although sometimes I will still teach them, just to make things more interesting ;P

Hey I made my first successful trade EVER in civ. I got conscription for Gunpowder...don't ask...
