Hi,

I've loaded up Beyond the Sword for the first time today after playing Vanilla seamlessly for the last two years!

On a sidenote, firstly I'd like to thank people for all of the feedback and support they've been giving others that I've been going over and getting all of the answers I've needed to get the game up and running; the information about issues regarding downloading patches really, really helped!

Okay.

I've loaded up the old Civilization IV (patch 1.74) and this problem does not exist there, it's only with BTS (before and after I patched it to 3.19).

I think the best way to describe this is through uploading screenshots, so forgive the bad description. I changed the skin on BTS to the 'vanilla' Civ IV main menus so that I could compare the two very easily.

When you load up the game, the main menu that has the options for 'Single Player, Multiplayer' etc. are inside a blue box. In my error that I'm describing, this blue box is missing or transparent, and the text stands alone.

Then when you move into, for example, custom games the problem gets a lot worse as any box is now transparent, leaving only text on the whole screen, which makes it almost impossible to click boxes to change game options or anything as the boxes are transparent/missing

When you launch the game, the problem then esculates as all the boxes are again transparent, but the toggle options above the mini-map are again not visible, but are still there as when you hover the mouse icon across them the options appear and you can click the buttons.

I'm *hoping* I don't get embarrassed and I'm being exposed to having an underspecced system, but I'm very confident that this isn't the issue.

So far I've only tried to reinstall the game once and re-patch and search these forums vigourously for a solution!

Hoping someone can help me a little, despite my poor description!

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, to try and sum up more clearly; I have an error that I hope someone recognises to diagnose for me and give me at least a push in the right direction of some support to fix the problem!

Ahhh - all of that is a foreign language to me!

I imagine there is a post in the forum/internet page where I can find this all out so bear with me for a little bit while I figure it out

is there a reason that windows is not updated to service pack 3? if not I'd recommend updating.
try installing this driver: http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winxp_197.16_whql.html
or check with the vendor you got the laptop from whether they have their own version of a graphics driver that is newer than 6/30/2008
also install this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en
and start the game click on advanced click on options click on the graphics tab - check whether in the menu that says anti-aliasing it says that it is off. if not set it to off/no anti-aliasing

Doing all of it now, will let you know how it goes in the next hour!

Also, with Anti-Aliasing set in the options, is setting the value to '0' off, or is this graphical error ironically making so it so I can't see an off setting? It was set at '2' before

Thanks a lot for the help so far!

I've done everything you've said so far, except for the bit about running the game with adminstrator rights - I'm not quite sure what I need to check here to get it to work!

It's a shame because when everything was installing I was hoping it was going to work; I installed 96 Windows updates in total, plus the other Windows link and the graphics card driver! It was all because Windows Service Pack 2 broke my last desktop and I decided then that I didn't want any more updates for a computer that was working fine - but now it's not fine because it won't play my game :(!

And yeah, it's the only account on the computer so I'm assuming it's an admin too, and nothing has worked thus far, even though for the overall health of my computer it's probably all been worthwhile nevertheless!

please open

my documents\my games\beyond the sword\civilizationIV.ini
(you can use any text editor for it)
and change all items with log in their name from 0 to 1 (5 of the last 6 items instead of the last one are the ones I mean). Then save and close the file.
then start the game, recreate some of the transparent screens, close the game and post all files in
my documents\my games\beyond the sword\logs
as a zip file

Okay, I've changed all the items in the file and created a zip file in the location you asked - what is it you want me to put in it? (sorry for the slowness in understanding just about everything, first timer for all of the techy stuff!)

no what I meant is start the game and it will create all sorts of files in that location (a dozen or so). Then after you recreated the error, close the game and put all the files that it created into a zip file and attach it to a post here :)
