It changed back again; I did save it so I can only hope that it changes after everytime you run the game? Otherwise I'm somehow messing up changing some numbers
just make sure that you are changing it in
civilizationIV.ini
and not
civilizationIV.ini.bak
(which is also in that directory and is a backup - sometimes that does weird things) - if you are unsure you might want to set windows xp to show file extensions: http://www.fileinfo.com/help/windows-show-extensions.html
also after you changed it in the right file, right click on it and click on properties than check the box that says read-only/write protected that should take care of things - you might want to uncheck that again later though.
Edit: cross post - if you have the right file now, try without the write protection first.
thanks, that was what I was looking for. Unfortunately those files do not contain any (unexpected) error messages so its still not saying what causes this.
I have to admit I am stumped. You might want to contact Take2 Tech Support about this
Yeah it is an absolutely bizarre fault - thanks a lot for your help though, I'll let you know as and when I get a solution! Hopefully I can get it fixed in time to play the next Game of the Month on here because that looks amazing!
as of yet, I still haven't had the problem fixed but I thought I would post the troubleshooting I got from Take Two in case someone with a similar problem had success with what they suggested:
- right click on the shortcut for the game.
- left click on Properties.
- click on the Compatibility Tab.
- tick the box called "Run this program in compatibility mode for."
- select a version of Windows to run the game in.
- click on apply.
- click on ok.
Then, do the following:
1. Delete all temporary files from your system.
WIN9X/ME
Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp and delete all files in this folder.
Win2000/XP
Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\*Your User Name*\Local Settings\Temp and delete all the files in this folder.
You may need to turn on the ability to view hidden files and folders to do this. To do so, double click My Computer, then click Tools and Options. Then click View and select the option to view all hidden files.
2. Close down all background tasks.
To do this click Start, then Run, then type MSCONFIG and click OK. From there click on the tab marked startup.
For Windows XP users click the button marked as Disable All, then click Apply and Close.
For Non Windows XP users, please remove the ticks from all of the boxes apart from the below four and then click Apply and close.
LoadPowerProfile
ScanRegistry
SystemTray
TaskMonitor
Once this has been done, please reboot the computer and then try the game again.
Try running the game in DX9 mode:
- Click on your start menu.
- Go to Games.
- Right click on the Beyond The Sword icon that appears.
- Choose to "Play - DirectX9."
Alternatively, if you have a desktop icon for the game try the following:
- Right click on the game's shortcut icon and click "Properties."
- On the "Shortcut" tab, in the section that says "Target" go as far right as the text allows, and outside the last quotation mark (") type a space, followed by "-dx9."
- Click Apply, then OK.
The game will now run in DX9 mode and should run a bit more stable for you.
Dude sorry that i saw it this late, its pretty easy to solve your problem.
1. If you have bought BTS with Steam or some else e-downloading crap, then their is mostly 1 bug in their data, you have to buy Warlords too und install it (but its needed to be from a e-download shop too.
I tested it :-(
Some of the E-Download sites know about that issues, and are offering free expansions. Just check their forums, or just buy warlords from the same e-downloader and problem is fixed
