Tropico 3

Anyone know what kind of DRM this thing has? i.e. Starforce?

My computer hasn't bricked yet, so I can hope it's not Starforce.

Surely no company is ******** enough to still use them, right? ...Right?

There's a CD key but I'm unaware of any DRM on it.

That's good to know gentlemen. I seem to remember reading something on the Wargamer about Tropico 3 and DRM. I'll have to dig a little deeper because I really want to have this game but don't want intrusive mechanisms infected onto my rig.

Anyway I picked this up and I basically agree with the positive stuff people have said about it here... it seems pretty good, has a nice fun feel to it. Anyone else having trouble with the roads though? They seem awfully picky about where they will and won't go down, which is annoying when you place a building then find that you can't connect it to a road for no obvious reason. Other than that I've had no big issues with it.

Agreed entirely. Object placement feels kinda... screwy.

Also, after playing through a few times, I regret to say... Tropico 3 doesn't have much replay value for me.
It feels like there's only certain ways to do things, don't feel much freedom. Still a good game, just doesn't have the replay value of earlier Tropicos.

I would really like a map editor.

I wish I could return it :(

I've had enough time to really come to a complete opinion, and I've gotta say this...

Tropico 3 sucks.
It's an obviously unfinished game with severe balancing issues (WE WANT MORE CHURCHES! EVEN IF WE HAVE 10!), repetitive audio (FILTHY SHACKS! FURRY HUG! FILTHY SHACKS! FURRY HUG!), a broken random map generator (You want oil? TOO BAD! You want to have enough flat land to really build what you need in more than just one part of the island? TOO BAD!), almost no replay value (to win, you pretty much have to stick to just one set plan), repetitive audio (it deserves double mentioning. ITS ALWAYS ALL WORK AND NO PLAY FOR EL PRESIDENTE.)

It's also worth mentioning the sheer level of bugs included in this game. The most irritating are related towards placement and AI behavior.
The former means that you can find yourself screwed because, even though it -looks- like you can build a road or building in one spot, the game claims you cannot.
The latter means that somehow your rich citizens will sometimes decide to live in tenements and shacks, even though they have the money to rent an apartment or own a house/mansion and there is room available for them to do so, or it means that people will decide to just be homeless even if they have an education (which is why you'll find your military to usually be lacking.)

To make matters worse?
Tropico 3 is also near unmoddable because of how it was made.

Don't buy it until the makers fix it, stick to Tropico 1 and 2 which are -excellent.-

In fact, I think the following image sums up the game experience:

What is it with Tropico and roads? All 3 versions have had this irritating road problem. I think Tropico would catch on and alow you to "level terrain" order. In 1 I build a string of fountains every other tile to map out my roads. Then build my buildings. Once done, I go back through and wipe out the fountains to replace with roads and shrubbery. It is a hassle but looks nice when it is done. Although I thought the annoying road system would be fixed in 2, then 3. Guess not.

The one thing I liked about Tropico was the terrain editor. I wish T3 had one...

Anyone gotten the expansion yet? Curious if Kalypso actually listened to complaints for once and actually fixed some things in it.
I kinda doubt it, but you never know.

Is it out already outside of Steam? I already have a physical copy.

Well, I bought and played Tropico 3's expansion pack, so here's my review.
However, I must split this into two parts, as it's both an expansion pack and a mega-pack.

THE NEW CONTENT
-2 new outfits. One's Elvis, the other is some weird thing with suspenders.
-New Edicts! Most of these are ones you want to avoid, honestly. But I guess they add flavor, like Have Juanito Shot (FILTHY SHA-*blam*)
-A new building category that is mainly just for some art (the megalomania section), nuclear missiles, a couple of tourist/entertainment spots, a garbage dumb, and wind turbines.
-Some new parts to campaign/challenge mode.
-A new radio announcer, who is basically an unpleasable witch that words everything negatively (We lowered pollution, now only the rich can afford that hazardous smog which is responsible for all that is great in Tropico. Paraphrasing, but seriously. I think I hate her more than Juanito.)
-A new feature wherein your island may have one faction that is larger than the others (ie a mainly religious island, a mainly nationalist island, a mainly communist island, etc.)

And that's pretty much it for new content.
Overall, that's -pathetic- for the pricetag. If they didn't made the game so hard to mod, those would all be features the player community could make.

I'd rank it at a 3 out of 10. It's really below average.

However, as I said, Tropico 3 Absolute Power is also a megapatch, because the company that made this game apparently has no idea how to release a free patch.

The AI is slightly improved, happiness bonuses feel fixed (religious faction isn't near unpleasable anymore).
There's still a huge amount of glitches left to cover, but they managed to remove most of the big ones (no more college-educated shack-dwellers.)

With that being said, I'd bump this expansion up to a 4 out of 10. It's still sub-par, but the bug-fixes make this a warrant if you that the money to blow.

So would you say Tropico 1 tops this one?

I personally did not care much for 2. It pretty much felt like a crappy version of a similar game. I enjoy 1 more as the island is self sufficient and have actually ran an open ended game up to around 2060 before being voted out and I still think I can go longer than that. I like to simply develop my island and see if I can get it entirely covered. (Not an easy feat by the way I play.

How would you guys compare 3 to 2 and 1 in your opinions?

1 is one of the best city builders I've ever played, hands down. 2's fun, but not as good.
3 is... Tropico 3 is not a Tropico game. It feels like if some cheap knock-off company tried to do a Tropico game, kinda like the knock-offs you can get from China. "Olah 3, starring Master Chef!"

Most of the Tropico 1 guys moved onto Firaxis later on, didn't they? It'd be neat if Firaxis made a true Tropico game. Even if they don't work for Firaxis, Firaxis seems like the best choice to do it.

I disagree. Tropico 1 was good. #3 is just about as good; but did need some polish to clean it up a bit. It just needed an editor to put it over the top.

I picked it up from Steam last weekend and must say that I'm very satisfied. The different missions gradually increase the difficulty and introduce new aspects of the game (I have finished 5 missions so far).

One major problem I foresee is that Tropico 3 probably doesn't have much replay value once you finished all missions and maybe 1-2 sandbox games. But until then, I hope it will be fun.

Oh, and the music is haunting me in my dreams!

Mixed reviews here. I came really close to buying it today before deciding to opt out and check out what people think.

Is there mods or anything for the game that make improvements?
