Trouble Installing a mod

I have a copy of Civ 4 BTS on Steam and have enjoyed it greatly. I recently discovered there are some custom mods here that looked interesting, one of them is the Navy Mod. I thought I would try it and so I copied the folder into the custom mods folder and loaded up the game. I went into mods and it didn't show up at all. I then found a thread somewhere (can't find it now) that explained to install custom mods you need to copy the content to the BTS folder that's found in the "My Games" directory (I have windows 7). I tried that, and now the game won't even start. Did I just wreck my copy? If so, how do I install this properly?

Not sure about wrecking your copy, although a fresh reinstall can't ever hurt. But I know that the steam version uses some odd installation system for mods that's different from what us normal folks have to do. Can't tell you exactly what though as I am still using my CD from the the 2000's. But I know you need to make sure to look up steam relevant instructions and make sure any instructions you get are steam related.

Also make sure your steam version actually has the proper patch. I am not sure if steam does this automatically.

It depends on the mod, but most mods require that you put them in Beyond the Sword/Mods. Not sure if that's what you're talking about when saying custom mods folder.

It has auto updates enabled. That may be the problem since it never occurred me that there would be a different installation procedure for Steam.

I tried saving it there first, and it didn't work.

I attached the first location I tried installing it to, I removed after it didn't work but I tried putting the extracted "Navy Mod" folder in there with the folders for the preinstalled mods like Rhyse. Then I loaded the game, went to the mods menu to play a game with it, and didn't see the Navy mod....only the existing preinstalled mods.

The other location was in the documents/My Games/beyond the sword, where I took the stuff from the navy mod and just copied it into the stuff that was in there such as assets. This was what broke the game. As I'm writing this I'm doing a reinstall from Steam.

So, in the OP I linked to the mod, I still have the zip of the mod. How do I install it properly with the Steam version?

Your image is where I would put the Navy Mod folder and mod.

I have seen some reports of Steam installs where there is a duplicated folder in the structure. I cant remember if it is like ".../Beyond the Sword/Beyond the Sword" the one before that that is repeated. If it is repeated then try the other one.

What are the errors you are getting? Something like "unable to execute file"?

Apparently the Steam install has problems with mods in general, you can try to fix it with this solution.

It looks like it worked this time, I showed up in the mod selection menu. Why it didn't before I have no idea, but it seems to work this time. Thanks!

It wasn't giving an error message. I could hear the hard drive working, but nothing would show up. It's like it tried to load the game but just gave up and quit without an error message. Looking at the processes the exe didn't show up. A full uninstallation followed by reinstalling it fixed this and it's working again.

I have no idea what happened but I'm glad it's working now.
